From Library Journal
With the continued popularity of Robin Hood movies, many might wonder what life was like in the Middle Ages. Art historian Bayard has translated and edited the household advice of a Parisian citizen of the late 14th century to his young wife, A Medieval Home Companion , and added 40 medieval woodcuts . Although some of the more archaic and, for modern readers, offensive elements are omitted, enough remains to provide an excellent notion of how to maintain a house medievally. While some of the tips are not all suited for modern tastes ("to remove spots of oil or grease from clothes, heat some urine and soak the spot with it for two days"), other advice is more useful, like garden hints and how to deal with workmen and servants. A good human interest book, this history should appeal to a broad audience.

Wonderful!

This was such a charming translation, I read it in one sitting. Basically covers a small portion of his directions to his young wife as to how to run the house and comport herself in public, and includes a small amount of gardening advice along with some home remedies. He was indeed a good man (for his time), and one can imagine his wife was charming as well. It's too bad Ms. Bayard didn't undertake more of the work of the "Menagier de Paris" -- she said it was because she didn't think people would be interested ... but having read other translations, I certainly am. She has a real gift for this. I hope she comes out with more.

What a Treat?

This was another instance where I'd borrowed a book and then realized it was something I was using so much, why not have my own copy? It's loaded with information, and the format and illustrations make it a treasure.

How do you say "Community Property" in French?

Imagine you are a new bride, you've just tied the knot, the reception is over, that last glass of champagne raised in a toast. And now you and your newly-minted husband are embarking on that most beautiful of all journeys...the honeymoon. But instead of a tender glance, a kiss, a caress by moonlight, he hands you a book the size of a dictionary, written by him just for you and in the tiniest print, telling you how he likes things done. How he likes everything done...and he doesn't miss a trick.

From how to curry his horse, de-worm his dog, plant the kohlrabi and harvest the hops, get the best cuts of mutton, spin, dye and weave his wool, manage the servants and care for the ill, your new Mister isn't shy about making sure you know what he likes. He even his rules for your personal behavior. Yep, wifely deportment. How to dress, bathe, walk, speak, entertain the neighbors, honor his family, worship the lord, be modest about yourself and obedient to him. This amazing volume was written for a 13 year old girl who married a rich Parisian widower who didn't want his lawfully-wedding waif to waste time on a learning curve. Nope, Grampy was smart enough to take notes during previous marriages.

The name of the book is, in fact, The Householder of Paris. Over the centuries, it has been excerpted and translated and assumed the name given as the title of this version by Tania Bayard. It's a good version, although Ms. Bayard, a historian, apparently collapsed in exhaustion because the chapters dealing with servants and horses are very abridged. Not to mention interchangeable.

Hey, the guy meant well. He took the time to be detailed...minutely, precisely, almost obsessively detailed. But give him credit, his words of wisdom are easy to access: the weighty tome is carefully broken down into sections and articles. Like a legal document or any other endlessly long document that you'd rather eat glass than read. Here's an example. Article 2, section 4 advises the new bride as follows...

"First in all sauces and thick pottages, you should first pound the spices and take them out of the mortar, because the bread which you pound afterwards absorbs that which remains from the spices; thus nothing is lost that would be lost were it done the other way around." In other words, double duty from the spices, babe, because in addition to being a persnickety little bas...bas...little boy, he's also stingy and wants his money's worth from that quarter of cinnamon and parcel of saffon. And remember this is just Section two, article four, and he's just talking about pottage...bean soup, basically. And there are probably 100 more sections to go and a gazillion additional articles.

"Item: spices and bindings put into pottages ought not to be strained; but do so for sauces, that the sauces may be clearer and likewise pleasant. Item: know that pea and bean pottages or others burn easily, if the burning brands touch the bottom of the pot when it is on the fire. Item: before your pottage burns and in order that it not burn, stir it often in the bottom of the pot, and turn your spoon in the bottom so that the pottage may not take hold there. And note as soona s you see thaty our portage is burning, do not move it, but straightaway take it off the fire and put it in another pot. Item: note that commonly all potages on the fire boil over, and fall..." Okay, I gotta stop here. But did you see the best part? He even knows the best way for her to hold a spoon.

History is nothing more than how we spent yesterday. We can learn about the world and how it worked in various ways. My way is through these books, written by commoners or nobles, chefs, housewives, abbots, slaves. They are Heloise's Helpful Hints or Godey's Lady's Book written for a specific time and place. And it's more illuminating than many of the most precise history volumes ever written, when it comes to knowing the people, from the days of ancient Egypt to World War II. Too much of history is given to the destruction of our many worlds, citing this treaty breach, the misbehavior of that dictator, the date of the battles fought and the locations of the treaties signed. Learning how we built those societies and how we got through the day, fixed lunch, went to work and had an occasional day off have much more appeal for me. This book deserves five stars. I only hope that our elderly widower met an untimely and somewhat suspicious end...and that his pretty young wife (and maybe that handsome groom) had a rock-solid alibi.
