About the Author
Catherine Fletcher is Lecturer in Public History at the University of Sheffield. Her first book, Our Man in Rome: Henry VIII and his Italian Ambassador, was published in 2012. Catherine graduated with a first-class degree in Politics and Communication Studies from the University of Liverpool and worked for the BBC Political Unit before studying for a PhD in History at Royal Holloway, University of London. She held fellowships at the Institute of Historical Research, the British School at Rome and the European University Institute before taking up her current post in 2012. She has published widely on aspects of early modern political culture and diplomacy. Catherine is a regular media contributor and has been a guest on two editions of BBC Radio 4's 'In Our Time' among other programmes. She has been a historical adviser to the new TV production of Wolf Hall and blogs at History Matters.

I feel fortunate that I could experience a glimpse of the HP Way

I was a Hewlett Packard employee from 1998 to 2004 (from 1998 to 2000 at their Madrid, Spain offices, from 2000 to 2004 in the Bay Area). Right now I am pursuing my PhD full time at Stanford University, at the Departement of Electrical Engineering headquartered at David Packard's builing.

For several reasons that it would take me too long to explain, I have been reflecting lately on how instrumental Hewlett Packard, and The HP Way, have been to my life successes.

A 30 year HP veteran, who had worked in the same offices as Bill and Dave when the company employed only several thousand employees, recommended me this book.

I was hesitant at first to buy it because on one hand, I had already read many books about HP, including Dave Packard's own. On the other, I thought I needed to put this part of my life behind me. Anyway, I ended up buying it. Not only that, I ended up devouring it over this weekend :D. It has been a very rewarding experience and has left me feeling very fortunate that I could live the last stages of Bill and Dave's masterpiece. For once, the fact that I was hired in Spain, made me able to experience the good HP Way longer (since changes always take time to spread outside the Bay Area and at the time I was hired HP Spain was still the jewel of the crown in business over there; Carly's hiring didn't have much impact in HP Spain's policies while I was there). There is also the fact that things didn't get really bad until the merger was closed in 2002 (although I still remember Carly's betrayal of the "take vacation but I will lay you off anyway in June 2001").

I was so touched by the book that I ended up visiting Dave and Lucille's Packard graves, which are located at a cemetery nearby my home. And there I found the final surprise. Just as these men led very productive, but unostentatious, lives, so did when the left this world (at least for Dave Packard). Humble, unpretentious and barely identifiable among others, Dave and Lucille remains final destination is a testament of the exemplary life led by one of the greatest business titans of all time. Bill's remains are interred further south; I will have to visit them at another time.

I deeply recommend this book to aspiring entrepreneurs. The HP Way not only worked, but, as with many other excellent things that one encounters in life, once you have experienced something like that at its best, it's very difficult to settle for less.

Exceptional and elucidating

This book very well describes the internal workings, governing, and constituency of the famous Hewlett Packard company. Any person with an interest in HP or the founders of the same should read this book, as it marvelously elucidates the principals, dynamics, and personalities who created and ran this very successful organization. The book also relates to forms of corporate management which are in principal highly enlightened. This is therefore also an excellent premise for learning how a successful corporation can be run, and how the principals of "ethics, morality, and humane corporate governance" can be attained and retained successfully through proven examples.

Another must-read for organizational leaders of all kinds

While I have long been an admirer and collector of Hewlett-Packard's test and measurement instrumentation, and a user of many of their other products, I was largely unaware of the company's status as a trailblazer in the enlightened and socially responsible management of large organizations. One might expect to see more references to HP in books such as McGregor's The Human Side of Enterprise: 25th Anniversary Printing or Greenleaf's Servant Leadership: A Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power and Greatness 25th Anniversary Edition. Conversely, one might expect to come across references in Bill & Dave's writings to "Theory Y" or "servant leadership." Instead, it would appear that Hewlett and Packard did not see themselves as doing anything other than what was simultaneously in the best interests of their company's prosperity and those of the people to whom the company owed much of its success.

So many of the organizations we encounter today are profoundly dysfunctional in ways that would seem to be easily remedied by implementing some of the common-sense practices that kept HP management in touch with reality, that insisted that decisions be made by those most qualified to make them, and that continually earned the respect and trust of employees and customers. I would commend this book as a study in servant leadership to anyone involved in leading any type of organization.

You will also find explanations of the core concepts of machine learning algorithms and enough math and images to consolidate your understanding. I encourage people to read this book before reading "An Introduction to Statistical Learning". Highly recommended

There are many different types of books in Machine Learning. That cover various aspects of the field.
Some books are base on theoretic side: Learning from the Data.
Some books provide a gentle way for programming for Machine Learning in different languages
Some books combine theory and programming

This book "Fundamentals of Machine Learning" a good written book for practitioner in machine learning. For people that want to know how machine learning experts work. That processes they use, and how them organize there work.

In additional basic properties and ideas of general algorithms discussed.

This book uses excellent plant English, many examples and real cases

But if you need mathematical background or programming background I think you need use another book.

Much needed book for practioners

This book will teach you CRISP-DM workflow and how to think about analytics in a professional manner in addition to the core ML algorithms. The authors cover crucial practical information and work habits every data scientist should know. I do not know of any way to get this information other than making a lot of mistakes in the field. Well done! I encourage all my students to pick up a copy.

Treating Catcher as a cultural Rorschach test, In Cold Fear tracks debate discourse in open-ended interviews, public media, editorial letters, and in school board and community meetings in Alabama, California, New Mexico, and Virginia. Debate participants express common agreement with Salinger’s critique of postwar American life but divide over whether adolescents should be either exposed to or protected from this perspective. The peculiar angst of the debate is explained by participants’ articulation of a wizening of the American spirit: a declining vision of American exceptionalism, recognition of social powerlessness, and fearfulness of an uncertain American future rooted in the threat of nuclear annihilation.

In Cold Fear provides historical post-holes for understanding how differing audiences interpreted Catcher and offers a suggestive context for understanding the contemporary anxieties of America’s "troubled teens."

No logical flow and too dense

This book is supposed to be a primer, an introduction to the pharma industry but it is too dense. Each of the chapters are written by different people who are experts in their field. But the end result is that the book does not have any flow and some of the earlier chapters go into way too much detail for anybody to comprehend or even care.

I will not be recommending this book to anyone!

Nice concept, poor execution

This book has several grammatical errors/misspelled words. It also seems that for each of the 101 points the author wrote a stream of conscious paragraph & didn't edit. There are also points that appear to contradict each other - two examples of this:
1. If you have trouble keeping track of your credit/debit cards & get hit with fees, consolidate to one card || Buy what you really like, not what you can afford.

2. Walk your pet, it is relaxing and healthy. || Don't own a pet, they are expensive.

The book has potential, but doesn't deliver the goods in a meaningful way.

Check Your Work

The advice given is so basic as to be unhelpful. However, there are some people who are completely clueless about managing their lives and need the most basic of information, so I'm trying not to fault the author on this point. What makes this a truly one-star read is its shoddy writing. It seems like the author did not simply fail to edit but actually did not even read over what was written. Punctuation and syntax were abyssmal, and many sentences were utterly nonsensical. The advice could have been groundbreaking and golden, and it still would have been painful to read and not worth the time.

MUST READ-CAPTIVATING & ROMANTIC!!

Shifterella And The Billionaire Bear is a SLEEP-STEALING romantic adult fairy tale with an ending that every hot-blooded female dreams of.

Sable's gift for writing innovative stories truly shines as she lures readers into this captivating story.

The story features Ella Albertson a sexy, curvy, sassy, intelligent, beautiful hard working human; Aspen Asher, a hot, buffed, gorgeous, trustworthy, much sought after billionaire alpha bear shifter.

Ella is scheduled to work for a catering company at the Asher Ball. Female and male shifters will be in attendance including Ella's malicious stepsisters. Aspen's mom concocts a fail safe plan for her son to meet Ella.

This story has amazing, impressive and engaging characters, banter is superb, scene descriptions are extraordinary, pent-up rage, life threatening incidents, and explosive earth-shattering heart-throbbing romance that leaves you wonder-struck and wanting more.

Incredible, enchanting romantic well written read. I adored Ella and Aspen and the tender moments in the story. If you love shifter romance this is a pleasurable addition to your collection. In the world of paranormal the possibilities are endless but always fascinating. {I received an arc for an honest review}. Without reservations I highly recommend this book and the author.

I really wanted to like this book and I came close but...

Okay first of all I will say I do like a well written shifter book. I am not however as my husband may put it into the "bodice ripping" romance books where I the poor girl is really waiting to become a princess or having some rich guy sweep me off my feet storylines. That being said this came up as an Amazon recommendation so despite the title (which sounded like children's book) I read the description and decided to give it a try. I will say it was an interesting take on the whole Cinderella story and had enough unique components to make it an interesting read. There were a few grammar issues that didn't take away too much from the story. However, here is where I had to decide whether I did or didn't like the book. While play on cute puns can be great and I don't mind an occasional joke by the author but I felt as though the author struggled during their description of sex, okay hah bears like honey. The only thing is while some of the writing expresses a knowledge of the biology of the act and processes, the author marginalized it to the level of a school aged youth saying honeypot every chance they could. It was too distracting and made the sex scenes less than ideal. I also given the characters built by the author I felt as though Aspen's use of "babe" and Elle excessive use of "frikken" were outside of their characters, which also impacted their intimacy. The potential for the book was there, but I had to force myself to continue the book hoping the language hang ups either for the characters or for my own tolerance level would improve. Sadly it did not improve for me. Given what I've seen in this story I believe the author is capable of providing a worth wild storyline for future books in the series, and there was enough incentive to encourage me to read another and hope the issues I encountered in this book will have been resolved. I am hopeful and think the author has the potential.

(I updated my review only to clarify my wording, in that originally completed it on my table, and as we all have experienced at some point in our lives autocorrect has been both a savings and a confusion maker. I also, thought it only fair to clean up some of my own grammar and punctuation if that is part of my complaint to begin with.

Follow up: I have now read a couple others in the series, and the issues I saw were consistent in the follow up books as well. I find myself every time I checkout another of the books regarding them sort of a guilty pleasure, in that while I enjoyed the premise of the books and that they are somewhat unique, the grammar coupled with naïve of the intimate encounters almost made me want to fast forward through those sections. They seemed too juvenile for my taste, but that is a personal preference one that not everyone will share. Anyway, I will give the author credit for doing a great job tying in the books from this series into the books from her other series in that occasionally various characters can make an appearance in the different books. Chances are I will probably read another one of her books, but still have a hard time saying I like or loved her work so at least for this book I will keep the 2 rating.

Aspen's mother dresses her in a beautiful ball gown

Ella who is in reality Eleanor is a human woman and, is in a tough situation. Her father passed away leaving her with her stepmother and step sisters. Who are greedy selfish women, on top of that they are cat shifters. She is their maid plus busts her butt working hoping to attend college one day. She takes on the Asher ball job and it turns out to be more than just a job. Aspen is tired of attending endless balls his mother throws. Just as he's tired of women only being after him for his money.
Ella isn't given an ordinary job though, Aspen's mother dresses her in a beautiful ball gown. Says she just wants her to be her eyes and ears. Then she meets Aspen and well he knows she is the one. There is some excitement along the way but it ends well and they get their HEA. I love Sable's twist on this excellent fairy tale. I can't wait to read more of the series. If you like a twist on fairy tales this is the book for you.

Blake Meike is a passionate engineer, architect, and code poet. As an author, speaker, and instructor, he has taught thousands of people how to write Android apps that aren’t toys. He has more than 20 years of coding experience, most of it with Java, building systems as large as Amazon’s massively scalable AutoScaling service and as small as a pre-Android OSS Linux/ Java-based platform for cell phones. He is co-author of several other books, including O’Reilly’s bestselling Programming Android and Wiley's Enterprise Android. Blake holds a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Dartmouth College and was a founding member of Twitter University. He lives in Oakland, CA, and works for Cyanogen Inc.

One of the Best Android Books I've Read.

This book is fantastic, and even in its early pages will help reframe the way you think about concurrency on Android. The Author uses a smooth, easy to consume writing style to bring through deep insights and historical knowledge on the topic, and manages to be exactly the right kind of tech book-an enjoyable bedtime read that can be digested in small chunks while still delivering deeply technical lessons. Those whose primary programming experience is with Android and Java will be particularly rewarded as the topic is discussed from a variety of angles outside of the normal Java idiom in order to highlight some particular insight about the way Android and Java handle the issues.

One of the best Android books I've read and while it is not for beginners, it will be of extreme benefit novices through masters.

A fantastic analysis of Android's bizarro-java constructs for concurrency. Highly recommend even for people who think they understand the fundamentals (hint, you probably don't understand some concepts like you think you do). What makes it even better is you get the wonderful dry wit from the author which makes some of the dense abstraction concepts a bit easier to bear.

If every programming book were this good, the world would be a better place

This is a fantastic book. It's one of the best programming books I've read, ever.

I might further add that I'm not in the target audience for this book. I'm not an android developer and my knowledge of Java is not especially deep. It is a testament to Meike's skills that those things didn't matter. All of the concepts -- and some of them are quite subtle -- are so clearly explained, and the code examples are so logically laid out and expounded that at no point did I feel lost or overwhelmed.

Mieke's writing is fluid and logical. Each chapter follows the model that was taught to me by my first editor when I wrote my first software manual 3+ decades ago: "I tells ya what I'm going to tell ya, then I tells ya, then I tells ya what I told ya." The overall logic of the book is easy to grasp, as is the logic of each chapter.

Equally important, Meike has mastered the very difficult art of addressing the reader in a confident, sometimes sly, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny voice that at no point becomes snarky or arrogant. The effect is that you both trust him and enjoy his company.

After an engaging Preface, Meike, in Chapter One, gives a very brief history of modern computer architecture and the evolution of (and distinction between) procedural and functional programming languages. Now, you might think that this kind of stuff is filler that can safely be skipped by anyone with any kind of CS background. But I advise that you don't skip it; it's there for a very good reason, and that's to show you how your naive assumptions about concurrency may be wrong, and how a slightly different mental model may be much more helpful.

The naive assumption is that it's your job to keep track of all available computing resources and structure your program to make best use of them. Wrong! That's the job of the compiler-writer.

In Meike's words,

"The purpose of the discussion, up to this point, has been to reframe the idea of concurrency. Concurrency is not a way to make a program run faster. It is not a complex juggling trick that ninja coders use to keep multiple balls in the air at one time. On the contrary, it is the apparent sequential execution of a program that is the complex trick. Sequential execution is an illusion maintained by a cabal of compiler writers and hardware architects. Concurrency is simply the relaxation of a fabricated constraint. In the developer’s environment, where time and order are rigid and implicit constraints, “concurrency” is just another word for “order unspecified”."

The rest of the book is simply an exploration of how to know, given how Android and Java work, (1) when it's OK to relax assumptions about sequential program execution, and (2) the best technique in any situation for indicating "order unspecified."

Throughout, Meike continually uses the technique of showing what one's "naive" assumption might be about how to solve a programming task, and contrasting it with the correct approach. Each example serves as an exemplar of a pattern, and the patterns are diagramed in helpful, clear diagrams. Throughout, the author demonstrates a deep familiarity with all aspects of Java development and Android programming, even down to explaining where Java documentation is wrong about the behavior of certain classes, or how Android implementation has changed ever-so-slightly from one revision to another.

I'm tempted to quote some code examples to give a flavor, but I guess this is already a bit long for one of these kinds of reviews. If you're an Android developer, do yourself a favor a pick up a copy of this book right now. And even if, like me, you just like to read books like this to get a better understanding of how things work, you should seriously consider investing in it as well. It's a real gem.
