Applied Structural Steel Design, Fourth Edition, continues to serve readers with a basic understanding of the strength and behavior of structural steel members and their interrelationships in simple structural systems. By providing content that is primarily an elementary, noncalculus, practical approach to the design and analysis of structural steel members, using numerous example problems and a step-by-step solution format, this text has remained true to its reader-friendly tradition. This edition, however, is a transitional text that bridges two methods of design that are currently being used: Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and Allowable Stress Design (ASD). Most engineering professionals agree that LRFD will become the dominant method in the future. However, since the traditional ASD method remains popular and practical and is still widely used, this text uses the traditional method while devoting entire chapters to the LRFD method.

refreshing to have answers and realize they're really attainable

tom rand gives a really fresh and importantly practical (and data supported!) view on how we're going to fix this massive problem staring us in the face. instead of just mentioning some interesting solutions out there, he puts out exactly how useful they can be RIGHT NOW, if we were to put the same investment (ie hundreds of billions) into them that we do into oil.

he's a fabulous communicator and clearly privy to all the most exciting things coming out of the start up and green tech world.

also amazing imagery, so you dont have to sit down and read it all at once. it's a very very visual work, that i highly recommend.

'Kick the Fossil Fuel Habit: 10 Clean Technologies to Save Our World' by Tom Rand is a great book that focuses on the energy problems of today, and the solutions that we have at our disposal for the future. Human beings are more aware now than ever before that oil is running out, and with superpowers like China beginning to eat resources at a rate faster than the United States in their growth, it's ESSENTIAL that companies use other options now when, but NOW.

The 10 clean technologies are: Solar, Wind, Geothermal, Biofuels, Hydropower, Ocean, Smart Buildings, Transportation, Efficiency, and the Energy Internet

I love the beautiful pictures in this hardcover 250 page book, and it's a more positive spin on a problem that has gotten so much bad press.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) is a leading figure in twentieth-century architecture. This book embodies a unique document of his philosophy of architecture, his way of working and his rigorous teaching methodology. Mies also made a significant contribution to architectural education, first as Director of the Bauhaus between 1930 and 1933, and later in the USA at the Illinois Institute of Technology. This tome devotes an entire section entirely to the architect as educator, which is illustrated with examples drawn from Mies' students at IIT. The final section traces his life from his early years as the son of a stonemason to his eventual emergence as the twentieth century's master architect of steel and glass, through a collection of statements by Mies himself and his colleagues. Van der Rohe, father of the glass and steel modernist skyscraper, affected his field more dramatically than most of his contemporaries. This copiously illustrated survey of all the major buildings and projects on 192 pages measuring 11.50 x 9.88 inches includes 31 listed projects, several chapters illustrated with additional projects, 400 B&W illustrations, mostly photos, but also technical ones (plans, sections, details, elevations, etc.), 33 pages with educational notes, biographical chronology, etc. A few photos are too big, i.e. do not have enough content for their size, and a few details are too small, simply not legible enough, and inferior to those included in the bilingual "Mies Van der Rohe (Studio Paperback)" by Werner Blaser published under ISBN: 3764356197, though in a smaller format, but with some illustrations more legible.

The Definitive Technical Analysis of Mies's Architecture

Peter Carter, who studied under Mies at IIT, wrote this book in the early 70s, shortly after Mies died. It's been long out of print, and I paid dearly to get a copy of the original version, shortly before this rerelease was announced. A lot has happened in architecture since it was written and yet Mies's best work still shines as brightly. For anyone with an interest in Mies in particular, or modern architecture in general, whether as a professional or layman, this is a must-have book.

This was perhaps one of the best books I've ever read in the D/s genre (and I've read many!). Viola's Heart Strings is an erotic, well-written tale about a young woman who meets and falls in love with a baron who has particular tastes: the need for control, obedience, and submission. As Viola learns to obey her husband, he teaches her to embrace her own sexuality inherent in her submission, and thus begins their sensual, sometimes dark, heavily erotic evenings of sexual pleasure. Though gentle and kind, her husband remains aloof, and Viola yearns to discover the secret he keeps from her and his mysterious past.

This book is deeply erotic but tastefully done, filled with mystery and intrigue, and unabashedly sensual in the exploration of power play, self giving, and love.

The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was the Luftwaffe s prime multi-role heavy fighter. By the time Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, 10 Luftwaffe Gruppen had been equipped with this heavy fighter. However, as a long-range escort fighter, the Bf 110C received a disastrous mauling at the hands of the more nimble Hurricane and Spitfire during the "Battle of Britain". Rather than protecting the bombers under escort, the Bf 110C formations usually found that they were hard-pressed to defend themselves, and the farcical situation developed in which single-seat Bf 109E fighters were having to afford protection to the escort fighters. The complete failure of the Bf 110C in the role for which it had been conceived led to its eventual withdrawal from the Channel coast but did not result in any reduction in its production priority.
Author John Vasco has researched a wealth of new material on the B, C, D and E variants of this aircraft, including many previously unpublished photographs and high-quality artwork and color profiles. I love books like this...

...filled with photos and drawings, minutely detailing what the difference is, say, between a Bf 110C-2 and a Bf 110C-3. With captions that detail features that, even though they've been pointed out, still sometimes take a long look to discern.

As the other reviewers have noted this is a superb book, an obvious labor of love by author Vasco who seems determined to know more about the Bf 110 than anyone else. He seems to have succeeded admirably.

About the only complaint that can be made is that Vasco didn't cast his net wide enough, not going back to the early prototypes or forward to the specialized night fighters. But that is unfair quibbling; the book is precisely what the title proclaims - an illustrated study of the Bf 110C, D, and E. A definitive book that we've come to expect from the Classic line.

Impressive Nuts-and-Bolts Guide to Early Bf 110s!

Luftwaffe fans should enjoy this detailed technical study of Messerschmitt's 110 'destroyer' published by Ian Allan in 2008. Noted author John Vasco and illustrator Fernando Estanislau offer up 192 pages of photos, profiles and diagrams detailing the C, D and E models. It's quite an impressive package, a real treasure trove devoted to Messerschmitt's twin-engined heavy fighter.

After a short history of the pre-war B model, the authors describe each sub-type in detail in succeeding chapters from C-1, C-2, etc. through E-3. To illustrate the coverage found in Vasco's book, the section on the Bf 110D-0 devotes nine pages to the portly - and deadly to its crews -'Dackelbauch' model with two color side-views, a G.A. drawing from the Bf 110 manual and 14 photos! Short chapters round out the book, describing converted nightfighter variants, camouflage and markings, servicing the Bf 110, etc.

The book is packed with hundreds of black & white and color wartime photographs including many reproductions from manufacturer manuals. Estanislau's numerous color illustrations furnish full-profile and close-up views of airframes, engines, equipment, weapons, differences between various models, and so on. Estanislau's artwork is on a par with that of Tom Tullis, 'nough said!

Though almost all the profiles depict unpainted aircraft, Estanislau includes five color pages showing basic schemes; the numerous photos providing a good overview of the camouflage schemes carried by the early models.

If you're interested in the Bf 110 at war, you'll need to look elsewhere. But, if you're a modeller or a nuts-and-bolts airplane enthusiast, MESSERSCHMITT BF 110 C, D AND E will be just what the doctor ordered. It's pricey at $54.95 but the book is well worth it. Recommended.

Bf-110 technical details source

Highly detailed and useful book. Don't be put off by the fact that the artist's color profiles are of unfinished primered aircraft (no camouflage or tactical markings). Their purpose to shown the physical aspects of the various different model types and they do this very well without being "painted over" as it were. I just hope there is a second volume delving into the F and G models also. It this one. I fills a nitch in any comprehensive reference collection.
