Einstein: His Life and Universe, by Walter Isaacson

By the author of the acclaimed bestsellers Benjamin Franklin and Steve Jobs, this is the definitive biography of Albert Einstein.

How did his mind work? What made him a genius? Isaacson’s biography shows how his scientific imagination sprang from the rebellious nature of his personality. His fascinating story is a testament to the connection between creativity and freedom.

Based on newly released personal letters of Einstein, this book explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk—a struggling father in a difficult marriage who couldn’t get a teaching job or a doctorate—became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos, the locksmith of the mysteries of the atom, and the universe. His success came from questioning conventional wisdom and marveling at mysteries that struck others as mundane. This led him to embrace a morality and politics based on respect for free minds, free spirits, and free individuals.

These traits are just as vital for this new century of globalization, in which our success will depend on our creativity, as they were for the beginning of the last century, when Einstein helped usher in the modern age.

Amazon.com Review
As a scientist, Albert Einstein is undoubtedly the most epic among 20th-century thinkers. Albert Einstein as a man, however, has been a much harder portrait to paint, and what we know of him as a husband, father, and friend is fragmentary at best. With Einstein: His Life and Universe, Walter Isaacson (author of the bestselling biographies Benjamin Franklin and Kissinger) brings Einstein's experience of life, love, and intellectual discovery into brilliant focus. The book is the first biography to tackle Einstein's enormous volume of personal correspondence that heretofore had been sealed from the public, and it's hard to imagine another book that could do such a richly textured and complicated life as Einstein's the same thoughtful justice. Isaacson is a master of the form and this latest opus is at once arresting and wonderfully revelatory. --Anne Bartholomew

Read "The Light-Beam Rider," the first chapter of Walter Isaacson's Einstein: His Life and Universe. Five Questions for Walter Isaacson

Amazon.com: What kind of scientific education did you have to give yourself to be able to understand and explain Einstein's ideas?

Isaacson: I've always loved science, and I had a group of great physicists--such as Brian Greene, Lawrence Krauss, and Murray Gell-Mann--who tutored me, helped me learn the physics, and checked various versions of my book. I also learned the tensor calculus underlying general relativity, but tried to avoid spending too much time on it in the book. I wanted to capture the imaginative beauty of Einstein's scientific leaps, but I hope folks who want to delve more deeply into the science will read Einstein books by such scientists as Abraham Pais, Jeremy Bernstein, Brian Greene, and others.

Amazon.com: That Einstein was a clerk in the Swiss Patent Office when he revolutionized our understanding of the physical world has often been treated as ironic or even absurd. But you argue that in many ways his time there fostered his discoveries. Could you explain?

Isaacson: I think he was lucky to be at the patent office rather than serving as an acolyte in the academy trying to please senior professors and teach the conventional wisdom. As a patent examiner, he got to visualize the physical realities underlying scientific concepts. He had a boss who told him to question every premise and assumption. And as Peter Galison shows in Einstein's Clocks, Poincare's Maps, many of the patent applications involved synchronizing clocks using signals that traveled at the speed of light. So with his office-mate Michele Besso as a sounding board, he was primed to make the leap to special relativity.

Amazon.com: That time in the patent office makes him sound far more like a practical scientist and tinkerer than the usual image of the wild-haired professor, and more like your previous biographical subject, the multitalented but eminently earthly Benjamin Franklin. Did you see connections between them?

Isaacson: I like writing about creativity, and that's what Franklin and Einstein shared. They also had great curiosity and imagination. But Franklin was a more practical man who was not very theoretical, and Einstein was the opposite in that regard.

Amazon.com: Of the many legends that have accumulated around Einstein, what did you find to be least true? Most true?

Isaacson: The least true legend is that he failed math as a schoolboy. He was actually great in math, because he could visualize equations. He knew they were nature's brushstrokes for painting her wonders. For example, he could look at Maxwell's equations and marvel at what it would be like to ride alongside a light wave, and he could look at Max Planck's equations about radiation and realize that Planck's constant meant that light was a particle as well as a wave. The most true legend is how rebellious and defiant of authority he was. You see it in his politics, his personal life, and his science.

Amazon.com: At Time and CNN and the Aspen Institute, you've worked with many of the leading thinkers and leaders of the day. Now that you've had the chance to get to know Einstein so well, did he remind you of anyone from our day who shares at least some of his remarkable qualities?

Isaacson: There are many creative scientists, most notably Stephen Hawking, who wrote the essay on Einstein as "Person of the Century" when I was editor of Time. In the world of technology, Steve Jobs has the same creative imagination and ability to think differently that distinguished Einstein, and Bill Gates has the same intellectual intensity. I wish I knew politicians who had the creativity and human instincts of Einstein, or for that matter the wise feel for our common values of Benjamin Franklin.

The Wise Men: Six Friends and the World They Made

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Herrmann's reading offers solid, enjoyable and informative listening. Herrmann knows when his material is strong and does not try to compete with it. Instead, he delivers a straightforward yet endearing portrait of arguably the best mind of the last century. Herrmann keeps the text purely narrative, refraining from affecting a German accent when quoting Einstein and others, with the occasional accent appropriately slipping in only when pronouncing foreign words. In this, the first full biography based on Einstein's newly released personal letters, Isaacson takes care to keep the great mind's discoveries and theories comprehensible. Einstein, whose internally visualized thought experiments often led to his groundbreaking observations (at 16 he imagined chasing a light beam until he caught up to it), expressed these images with simplicity and elegance. Einstein's rebellious personality as well as the internal workings of his brilliant mind are brought vividly to life thanks to Herrmann's perfect reading, which is filled with warmth and accuracy.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Walter Isaacson (Benjamin Franklin **** Sept/Oct 2003) is the first biographer to gain access to Einstein's private archives, unsealed in 2006, and critics were delighted with the results. In this highly readable, articulate book, Isaacson brings the eminent scientist to life, dismissing myths (for example, that Einstein failed math) as well as recreating the world he inhabited and transformed. Aided by 21st-century scientists like Brian Greene, Isaacson explains Einstein's theories in laymen's terms, with varying results: most critics found the explanations easy to follow; a few did not. A thorough grasp of physics, however, isn't necessary to appreciate Isaacson's feat: he writes with affection and deep admiration for his subject, but he doesn't ignore his failings.

You Don't Have to be a Student of Physics to Enjoy this Book
By D. Buxman
In my experience, biographies of great scientists often leave the reader in a fog of technical complexity. While this book is not "Physics in One Simple Lesson," Walter Isaacson did a wonderful job of telling the story of the man and making the scientific aspects sufficiently understandable to be useful in grasping the magnitude of Einstein's intellect. This book is meticulously researched and sourced, yet written in a witty and entertaining way that makes reading it a pleasure. The central lesson that I was left with was the importance of independent thinking in any context. Einstein made it clear that conventional wisdom is often neither practical, nor wise. I was struck by his resiliance in his early years and his good humor in really tough times. I also appreciated the fact that the author was willing to examine all aspects of Eintein's personality, both favorable and unfavorable.

A complex man gets his due in fascinating biography
By Wayne Klein
Walter Isaacson's biography of Einstein creates a fuller better rounded image of one of the finest minds of the 20th Century than many biographies of Einstein. Although it's not without its flaws, Issacson's book covers much of Einstein's life pointing out both his successes and flaws as both a person and physicist.

We learn that as a child Einstein suffered from what could be echolalia (which is where you mutter a phrase to yourself multiple times before saying it to others). Issacson notes both Einstein's debt to Hume, Planck and philosphers such as Kant in helping develop both his world view and his breakthroughs in science. To his credit Isaacson also points out that the man that came to embody the modern view of physics and became a hero who had feet of clay; Einstein gave up his daughter for adoption without ever seeing her and spent much of his time away from Mileva (who would eventually become his first wife) while she was pregnant for a variety of reasons some understandable some not. The young Einstein was brash, egotistic and obnoxious (or you could call him overly confident) often pointing out flaws in papers by the very professors he was seeking jobs from. He also charts Einstein's difficult path to his professorship including his stint working in the Swiss patent office.

Isaacson does cover Einstein's support for the development of the atomic bomb (although this is a relatively small section of the biography) and mentions that Einstein later regreted his support and the bombing that occurred in Japan during World War II. When Einstein came up with his famous equation, he never imagined it would help pave the way for for mass destruction. He was conflicted over his role in the development of the atomic bomb feeling both responsibility and guilty over his role and how it led to the deaths of those in Japan and the arms race. This guilt shaped his role in leading the charge for a world government that would prevent individual nations from using the atomic bomb. He later stated that if he had known Germany wasn't going to be able to develop the atomic bomb, he "never would have lifted a finger" to prompt the United States to develop this weapon of mass destruction. He never forgave the German people for their role in trying to exterminate Jews and others prohibiting sale of his books in post-war Germany and stated that he felt the country should continue to be punished for what occurred. Isaacson addresses some of the contradictions of the man of peace who contributed and supported war showing that while Einstein had his absolute convicitions they could sometimes shift depending on the circumstances. Einstein never pretended to be perfect and Isaacson does a good job of portraying the flawed but brilliant human being at the core of all that brain power. The biggest surprise for me was discovering that he unwittingly had an affair with a Soviet spy and the fact that he refused to believe in Black Holes even though there was clear evidence (some of it in his theories)because it didn't fit his elegant view of the universe.

Most importantly the author manages to give understandable explanations of Einstein's theories and how he came up with many of them. One can't understand Einstein's world without understanding his world view or the way that his papers/theories altered the world we live in today. I'd recommend this book for the compelling human portrait that Isaacson creates of one of the leading figures of science in the 20th Century. Also recommended--

The human face of Einstein
By Jon Hunt
Walter Isaacson's sweeping new book about one of the great minds in life is a tribute to Albert Einstein through his life and his work. For those of us who know the renowned physicist through equations and reputation, Isaacson fills in the rest. Einstein's creativity and his abiltity to think far past others added so much dimension to the arena of science while his personal life was just as rich with detail. In "Einstein", the author reveals a dashing history.

As Isaacson says, Einstein wondered early on what it would be like to ride alongside a light beam. This kind of thinking outside the box led to a lifetime of successes and a few failures, as well. The good and the bad are covered here. What is so striking about this book is that the reader seems to grow with the subject. One cheers Einstein on in his youth as he throws convention out the window, bucks hierarchy and generally goes his own way. Later in life, as Einstein becomes more reasoned (but nonetheless no less radical) we understand the transformation. This is the key to the enjoyment of reading "Einstein"...the humanness of his person shines.

There are a couple of chapters which took me by surprise and are terrific additions to the book. One is titled "Einstein's God", a look at how science and religion may or may not be reconciled in Einstein's eyes, and a chapter on the "Red Scare". That Einstein should have lived through the McCarthy era and had the wits to comment on it is fortuitous, indeed.

"Einstein" may just be the best read of the year. Isaacson's narrative style flows and while there are a lot of technical points about physics necessary to the the story, it never for a minute lets down. I highly recommend "Einstein" and give tribute to Walter Isaacson, whose research and strength as an author gives us such a compelling look at Albert Einstein.

Pharmacology & Drug Administration for Imaging Technologists, by Steven C. Jensen PhD RT(R), Michael P. Peppers PharmD RPh

With a greater emphasis on drug administration both in the clinical setting and on national and state accrediting examinations, this text is very timely for students and technologists. The book is a combination text and workbook with broad application to all the imaging technologies, not just plain film radiography. It opens with introductory material and includes pharmacological nomenclature, drug classifications, pharmacokinetics, and drugs used in imaging, as well as comprehensive coverage of diagnostic contrast agents. In addition, drug administration procedures are presented along with emergency responses to drug reactions and legal and ethical aspects of medication administration.

* Combination text and workbook makes this sometimes difficult to comprehend information accessible to students and practitioners. * Clearly written text and useful tables of drug pharmacodynamics, classification, and chemistry, especially radiopaque contrast media, assists readers in understanding the cellular and systemic effects of drugs. * In-depth study of drug pharmacokinetics describes the manner in which drugs are absorbed, metabolized, distributed, and eliminated for a better understanding of drug doses and interactions. * Detailed drug administration descriptions prepare students to perform or assist with procedures in the clinical environment. * Complete coverage of emergency procedures prepares imaging technologists for treating adverse reactions following drug administration.

Brain Architecture: Understanding the Basic Plan (Medicine), by Larry W. Swanson

Depending on your point of view the brain is an organ, a machine, a biological computer, or simply the most important component of the nervous system. How does it work as a whole? What are its major parts and how are they interconnected to generate thinking, feelings, and behavior? This book surveys 2,500 years of scientific thinking about these profoundly important questions from the perspective of fundamental architectural principles, and then proposes a new model for the basic plan of neural systems organization based on an explosion of structural data emerging from the neuroanatomy revolution of the 1970's.
The importance of a balance between theoretical and experimental morphology is stressed throughout the book. Great advances in understanding the brain's basic plan have come especially from two traditional lines of biological thought-- evolution and embryology, because each begins with the simple and progresses to the more complex. Understanding the organization of brain circuits, which contain thousands of links or pathways, is much more difficult. It is argued here that a four-system network model can explain the structure-function organization of the brain. Possible relationships between neural networks and gene networks revealed by the human genome project are explored in the final chapter.
The book is written in clear and sparkling prose, and it is profusely illustrated. It is designed to be read by anyone with an interest in the basic organization of the brain, from neuroscience to philosophy to computer science to molecular biology. It is suitable for use in neuroscience core courses because it presents basic principles of the structure of the nervous system in a systematic way.

Review
"Larry Swanson, one of the great contemporary students of brain anatomy, has given us a broad overview of the structure and function of the brain using insights from embryology and from evolutionary comparison to highlight the principles that govern the anatomical substrates of behavior. This book will be read avidly by both students and practicing scientists."--Eric R. Kandel, M. D., Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Columbia University, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine

"Neuroanatomy is usually associated with boring memorization and dense terminology. But Swanson has brought the subject to life by focusing on the principles that underlie brain structure and function. These principles, illuminated by an historical perspective and placed in an evolutionary context, actually constitute a theory of brain. This book's logical organization, intellectual sweep, and clear writing made it a joy for me to read."--Charles F. Stevens, M.D., Ph.D., Howard Hughes Medical Institute, The Salk Institute for Biological Sciences

"This short book deserves wide readership. It could serve both as a general introduction for the undergraduate and as a means to widen one's horizon for the experienced researcher."--Jan Voogd in Science

"I was pleasantly surprised by the comparative and evolutionary approach used to introduce the major concepts, and I was drawn in by the historical context in which the story is told...a clearly written and logically organized overview of the major functional subsivisions of the vertebrate nervous system, accompanied by a commentary on historical views of brain function. It will be a welcome addition to the libraries of students and anyone interested in the basic organization of the brain."--Nature Neuroscience

Needs more diagrams, images and discursive flair
By John Harpur
Often the fit between research scholarship and effective writing skills is difficult to achieve. This book is an example of that unevenness that really should be caught by a good editor. Personally I found the text educational, interesting and peppered with historical gems that some lent anecdotal dynamism to the work. However, the illustrations are largly drawn from historical works, which is quaint but not particularly helpful given modern research requirements. The diagrams in the book are uninspiring grayscale shapes. I didn't find them informative.

The book really kicks off in Chapter 4, The Basic Vertebrate Plan. Disappointingly, Swanson's potentially mouth opening discussion of four rival brain architectures is too abrupt and tails off into vagueness. Its overall tenor is not helped by very plain diagrams of their components. The upside is that he covers the evolution in historical thought very well - of interest to any historian of science. Given my needs (computational modelling) the book was very adequate but only because I had already tucked From Neuron to Brain under my belt a few months previously.

The first few chapters cover neuroembryogenesis and the theories of neural plate development. After that, the book takes off through the vertebrate brain and four main systems (behaviour, motor, cognitive and sensory). it concludes with a brief chapter on learning and damage repair. The book drives home some points clearly and simply, such as the separate development of motor and sensory ganglion cirucits. Sometimes the descriptions are clouded by the author's view that conventional descriptors in human anatomy are the wrong way round (or just plain wrong). For instance, the anterior-posterior axis in humans is also called the rostrocaudal axis by neuroembryologists. This illustrates one of Swanson's bugbears, viz, that studies of human brain architecture have not made more of comparative neuroanatomy studies. I have no expertise to comment on this issue, but I did question its immediate relevance to the central text.

As the book runs through the main human brain systems, it becomes a bit thin in places. More pages are needed to elaborate complex principles and theories than the book affords. In his discussion of the cognitive system, Swanson argues that the grouping of components in the cerebral hemispheres is buried in a miasma of different and conflicting naming schemes. It is better to take guidance from embryology, he argues, in determining brain regionalisation schema. This promise of simplifcation, which would make any brain texts more readable at least, is undermined by the supporting diagrams. Time and again, interesting and intriguing hypotheses and critiques are let down by the lack of high quality visuals. It is a great pity, given the standards of other texts.

I must admit that I found this book interesting and Swanosn definitely stamps his 'own outlook' on the material. However, I was relieved I had digested something substantially more graphical in the area before reading this book.

Brain Architecture- An informative book explaining basic brain form and function
By Sarah Wetherington
"Brain Architecture: Understanding the Basic Plan" provides an informative and easy-to-read description of the structure and function of the human brain. While this book could serve as an introductory lesson to the human brain, it is also a great refresher for anyone with prior knowledge in the field of neuroscience. I would highly recommend this book to any person with an interest in introductory neuroscience, as well as any student searching for a clear description of both the basic form and function of the human brain.

Synopsis and Opinion:

Swanson divides the book into eleven chapters, and he provides three appendices as well as a glossary at the end. Overall, Swanson outlines the cellular composition of the nervous system, spatial relationships of its basic parts, and the network arrangement of its four basic functional systems. He claims that this view and description is "classical neuroscience" (219).

Chapter 1 is an informative introduction to how the brain works, and Swanson describes three biological perspectives, which include comparative, embryological, and theoretical approaches. In this chapter, he emphasizes the importance of Aristotle's initial work in the study of the basic structural organization of the nervous system, stating that some would argue Aristotle's Historia Animalium (History of Animals) as the finest textbook of animal biology ever written.

Chapter 2 outlines simple nervous systems, starting with unicellular organisms and detailing important milestones in architecture throughout evolutionary history. This chapter allows the reader to develop both a greater appreciation for and understanding of the complexity of the current human nervous system. Swanson distinguishes among sensory, motor, and interneurons, describing the role and importance of each in the human nervous system. He includes a discussion on the polarity of dendrites and axons, as well as amacrine processes and activity. He provides examples of protozoa, sponges, jellyfish, and hydra to support his claims. He explains that even protozoa, which are simple unicellular organisms, display "three classes of remarkably sophisticated behavior." This chapter concludes with a brief overview, emphasizing the fact that the complexity of nervous system organization, rather than individual neurons, has "evolved dramatically" over time (26).

Chapter 3 focuses on centralization and symmetry of ganglia and nerves in the nervous system. Swanson compares bilaterally symmetrical flatworms, segmented worms, and more evolved vertebrates. He focuses on polarity and regionalization, and concludes with a brief overview of topics discussed throughout the chapter.

Chapter 4 begins the meat of the book, explaining the basic vertebrate plan and nervous system topology. Swanson includes diagrams of the fundamental body plan as well as embryologic development. He describes early stages of mammalian development and includes a pictorial representation of the formation of a trilaminar embryonic disc in humans. He compares dorsal views of the neural plate of a shark to that of a human, and he outlines the formation of the neural tube. Swanson provides diagrams of both the three- and five-vesicle stages of the neural tube. He describes the development of the peripheral nervous system, as well as different neuron cell types and groups. Swanson provides a fate map of the embryonic ectoderm, showing both neural and somatic components. A brief overview at the end of the chapter emphasizes the importance of having commonly accepted boundaries and names of the nervous system, for they "provide a vocabulary for describing locations...[and] they are used for constructing maps" (76). Swanson asserts that an understanding of this vocabulary is an essential precursor to learning the wiring of the nervous system.

Chapter 5 discusses the brain and control of behavior via the motor system. Swanson says that the motor system is modulated by inputs from three systems, including the cognitive (for voluntary control), sensory (for reflex control), and intrinsic (for behavioral state control) systems. In this chapter, Swanson provides an introduction to the Four System Network Model and explains how the systems are interrelated.

Chapters 6 through 9 each detail one of the four systems, which include motor, behavioral state, cognitive, and sensory. Each chapter outlines the physiological importance of the system, as well as the functional mechanisms that allow for control of behavior. While Chapter 6 includes an overview at the end of the chapter, Chapters 7 through 9 do not. However, each chapter has clearly labeled subtitles throughout, allowing the reader to efficiently locate specific topics of interest.

Chapter 6 focuses on the motor system, which coordinates external and internal behaviors. Swanson defines motoneuron classes in the three major division of the motor system, which include somatic, autonomic, and neuroendocrine. Next, Swanson uses the example of flexion to introduce individual pools of motoneurons and the coordinated activity of pools. Finally, Swanson describes pattern initiators and controllers, such as drive and motivation, as well as cerebellar control of motor coordination and learning.

Chapter 7 focuses on the behavior state system, which is responsible for intrinsic control of sleep and wakefulness. Swanson describes circadian rhythms and the day-night cycle, as well as the reproductive cycle and modulation of the behavioral state.

Chapter 8 discusses the cognitive system, which plays an important role in thinking and voluntary control of behavior. Here, a diagram of cerebral cortex regionalization shows that the fundamental organization is relative straightforward. Next, Swanson explains cortical cellular organization, cortical projections, and the cerebral nuclei.

Chapter 9 details the sensory system, which includes inputs from the environment and the body. Swanson first explains the evolution and development of sensory neurons, followed by summarizing sensory neuron function and pathways. He then outlines forebrain and ganglion cell sensory systems, concluding the chapter with insight on relevance of this system to pain, pleasure, emotion, and mood.

Chapters 10 and 11 serve as conclusions to the overall message of the book. Swanson discusses modifiability of the nervous system, including learning, stress, cycles, and damage repair and regrowth. Swanson concludes that functional and genomic systems of the brain are both important in different respects, and he explains the relationship between the two.

Three appendices, A, B, and C, follow the last chapter, and they focus on describing position in the animal body, naming and classifying nervous system parts, and methods for analyzing brain architecture, respectively. Throughout the book, key words are italicized, and they are included in a glossary after the appendices.

Style and Structure:

This book is educational and well written, and it is suitable for any person interested in neuroscience. Swanson explains the basic principles of the central nervous system in a succinct yet captivating tone throughout the book.

Chapters 2 and 3 seem somewhat lengthy and a bit too detailed, as they do not directly relate to the primary focus of the book. While it is important to have a basic understanding of the historical significance of past research and evolutionary changes that led to current structure and function, this is not the primary focus of the book (as indicated by the title). Thus, the reader should note that while this historical analysis is necessarily important, the remainder of the book provides far more detail relevant to the architecture and basic plan of the brain.

Overall, Swanson effectively communicates complex topics for readers of any neuroscience background. While the book is somewhat slow to start, chapters 4 through 9 provide essential information that lays the foundation for an understanding of brain form and function. Every chapter has subtitles that allow for efficient reference and topic-specific reading, and chapters 2 through 6 include overview summaries at the end of the chapter.

Interesting Quotes:

"As a matter of fact, there is not even a list of basic parts that neuroscientists agree on, let alone a simple and clear account of what each part does." (2)
"Neurons in all animals can be divided into three fundamental types: sensory, motor, and interneurons." (26)
"Even unicellular organisms such as protozoa display three classes of remarkably sophisticated behavior that are, in fact, common to all higher animals because they are essential for survival: ingestive (or appetitive), defensive and reproductive." (37-38)
"The map we have outlined in this chapter illustrates the basic structural plan of the vertebrate central nervous system based on what little is known..." (76)
"Taken as a whole, the circuitry outlined...for the motor system is organized as a network and not a strict hierarchy because of the cerebellum and its input-output relationship." (136)
"The key to understanding the cerebral hemisphere lies in the arrangement of the structure-function regionalization map of the cerebral cortex." (180)
"Perhaps the greatest hope for repairing the damaged adult nervous system lies in understanding the cell and molecular biology of nervous system development." (218)

For Potential Readers:

This book is an essential find, as it provides a clear, basic outline of the human nervous system. Students will benefit from the author's informative tone, simplistic descriptions, and organized presentation. Professors and researchers could use this book as both a personal reference and teaching tool.

Although there is no "correct" way to read the book, I would highly suggest reading it through completely at least once. The Table of Contents provides chapter titles and subtitles within each chapter, so specific topics of interest can be easily located for reference. The most important information regarding actual brain structure and function is located in Chapters 4 through 9, so special emphasis should be placed on these sections.

A true inspirational role model!
By Kelli Brown
A true inspirational and motivational book. Once I began reading, I found it difficult to put down. A true tribute to how determination, dedication, love, support and a positive attitude can help anyone achieve whatever dreams they desire. Derek Jeter's journey from a childhood dream to the steps and scarifices he took in accomplishing his goal is a life lesson for anyone, whether you're 9 or 99. An intimate look at his family, his thoughts, his fears, his struggles, his triumphs...I found myself laughing, crying and reflecting on my own life as I related his experiences to my own. This book teaches you about Derek Jeter, but mostly, it teaches you about life. A+++++

Add a Star If You Are Under 18
By michael luciano
Derek Jeter is the superstar shortstop for the most well known sports franchise in the world and he reminds us of this on almost every other page. For some reason this does not come across as conceit. Jeter is a truly likeable individual and I think it is great that he has written a book that can serve as an inspiration for teens and young adults. So many of the sports stars out there today are horrific role models for today's youth. Jeter stands on his own as a respectful athlete who has not squandered his immense talent. That being said, while this book is a must read for any sports fan under the age of eighteen I do not believe that adults will feel the same way. I am a Yankee fan so I was able to find enjoyment from Jeter's stories about the great championship seasons of recent years. However, others will probably find the story telling a little too simplistic. If you are looking for a tell all book about his relationship with Maria Carey you will not find it here. If you are looking for a great gift to give to a young aspiring sports fan, this book is perfect.

Best book you can buy.

This book is incredible. I bought it 2 years ago thinking it was just about baseball, but it was much more then that. He talks about achieving your dreams. As a kid little Derek Jeter wanted to play Shortstop for the New York Yankees. Look where he is now. Short Stop for the Yankees. This dream wasn't just handed to him. He had to overcome a lot of challenges he dealt them in different ways. His parents where very supportive of anything he and his sister wanted. They deal a big part of his success.

This book was very useful to me. When I read it back in 8th grade I didn't want to put it down. SSR became my favorite part of the day so I could read it. I don't know how it happened, but the book was so inspiring. As I read it I would think, "Hey if Derek can do it so can I." Being in Special Ed. I thought, "I'm not as smart as other people so why bother." After reading it I began to focus on my grades a lot more. I did all my homework and suddenly I had all these good grades. In the middle of the year I got moved up to regular classes and at the end of the year I was moved out of Special Ed. I now think anyone in Special Ed. can do well they just have to work hard and focus on school.

I'm now in 10th grade and I'm working hard to graduate and get into college teachers have asked me what encouraged me and I always say, "Derek Jeter." For some teachers that I have loved I bought them a copy of this book and they loved it. Because of this masterpiece book my whole future has been changed. I now know what I want in life. There have been so many wonderful things that have happened to me just because I focus in school and I owe it all to Derek Jeter.

A classic, and a wicked fun read
By K. Bunker
Since this little volume first appeared in 1963, there probably hasn't been a single book written on the topic of the short story that doesn't make some mention of it.

O'Connor was a noted short story writer in his own right as well as an essayist and literary critic. His central premise in this book, that short stories tend to arise out of "submerged populations" (i.e., minority groups, immigrants, etc.) may not have gained wide acceptance in academic circles, but that doesn't diminish the interest or the charm of this book in the least. It's a thoroughly fascinating examination of the short story as an art form, and a rollicking fun read to boot.

Much of the "fun" part comes from O'Connor's unabashed and delightfully expressed opinions. Here he is on one of Ernest Hemingway's short story classics:
"In 'The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber' Francis runs away from a lion, which is what most sensible men would do if faced by a lion, and his wife promptly cuckolds him with the English manager of their big-game hunting expedition. As we all know, good wives admire nothing in a husband except his capacity to deal with lions, so we can sympathize with the poor woman in her trouble. [...] To say that the psychology of this story is childish would be to waste good words. [...] Clearly, it is the working out of a personal problem that for the vast majority of men and women has no validity whatever."

This may not represent the consensus opinion on Hemingway's story, but what fun it is to see someone stand up to the old pugilist and tweak his nose!

This is not to say that all of O'Connor's comments are snarky; he freely calls other Hemingway stories works of genius. And he bubbles over with enthusiasm when discussing many, many other authors as well. For example, regarding two Chekhov stories, "The Dependents" and "Misery," he says:
"Never in the history of literature has human loneliness been described with such passion as in these two stories."

Speaking of passion, it's clear that O'Connor has a tremendous and joyful love for the short story. Read this book for the pleasure of hearing a true artist practicing his art as he speaks about his chosen art form.

It is literary theory at its best, intelligent
By VFP
This is a classic study of the short story. It is literary theory at its best, intelligent, insightful and yet readable. This is not a book on how to write short stories rather it is a exploration and study of the genre.

Highly recommended for all lovers of the short story. O'Connor was a gift from Ireland.
