Do I need to say a word on this book? .. It is simply the best book ever written for the REVIEW of the seismic design .. I think It is not famous enough because it is purchased directly from the Author who is not doing much marketing for his great work. I totally recommend it .. I am totally in love with this book.

Started the video review material and this workbook with little to understanding about seismic design. This book breaks it down to very simple easy to understand, it is organized very well, examples and problems are easy to understand... can't imagine studying without it!!!

I have an amazing story, plus this book

It's relevant that more information is being published about this annoying problem and Dropping Acid is very helpful. The book has good info about reflux and some nice recipes (although I don't cook much).

Dr Koufman mentions early on about packaged foods generally being a problem and containing alot of acid but, I wish she would have gotten more specific about what to look for. Elsewhere I read that in the 1970's the FDA approved for preservative use in food things like: citric acid, malic acid and absorbic acid. (and who knew 35 -40 years ago that we would eventually consume SO MUCH packaged food. Almost everything in the grocery store is canned, bagged, jarred, boxed, frozen, etc.)

Once I realized this I became vigilant about looking at the ingredient contents of the food I buy. Well folks, you're going to be shocked because this is where you're getting alot of your acid intake. These preservative acids are in many canned veggies, crackers, cookies, cereals, yogurts and frozen meals....oh boy! It's crazy.

Listen, I had been taking 30mg of prescription Prevacid for almost a decade.
Here's what I did, starting Jan 2011:
1) Switched to acid-free coffee (Folgers has one called: Simply Smooth)
2) Eliminated all carbohydrated beverages (never drank much but, realized soda is poison)
3) Consume alcohol moderately. Maybe total of 3 or 4 glasses of wine per week.
4) Bought NOTHING that had any of those preservative acids in them. Clearly, this means more fresh food and only packaged w/o those acids!
5) Eat chocolate and tomato-sauced foods in small amounts (tomatoes themselves have alot of water in them so aren't a problem for me but concentrated things like pasta sauce and chili are an issue.)

After a couple of months of eating like this I had the courage to start trailing off the Prevacid. Well, I'm still surprised and thrilled to report that ** I have almost no symptoms anymore!** If I overdo it a bit (example: consume tomato sauces and wine OR chocolate and wine in the same meal) I'll feel it a bit (burping, bloating).

I now take a couple of over-the-counter Prevacid pills per week; sort of to keep things in balance. At least I'm thinking about it that way because I still can't believe that this worked. My God, all the money I would have saved on those prescriptions and the discomfort I could have avoided!

Anyhow, I hope this info is useful to others. Give it a whirl; it's worth the shot.

**UPDATE: May 2014 - Glad people are finding my review helpful. I need to add that I had not yet realized when I wrote the original review that fruit juices can be very tough on a stomach with acid sensitivity. That sounds like a no-brainer but I didn't know it and loved drinking cranberry and apple juices mostly (not citrus, I knew I couldn't tolerate that). Well, when I eliminated regular consumption of fruit juices was a BIG improvement. I take no acid reflux meds at all now. You just have to figure out what your trigger foods are and ditch them!

Dr. Koufman Saved My Husband's Life

My husband has had chronic GERD for years without knowing it. He started having symptoms that didn't make sense around last January. He was short of breath, cleared his throat a lot, had nausea and an upset stomach, and finally passed out in the middle of the night. I found him unconscious on the bathroom floor. After months of tests his GI doctor diagnosed him with Barrett's syndrome, a precancerous condition of the esophagus, but he couldn't explain the respiratory involvement. Worse yet, the only solutions offered were very invasive - surgery to remove the abnormal cells or light therapy with not the best chance of success. We needed a second opinion and we found Dr. Koufman. She ran different tests that tracked his acid level during an entire day of activities, including while eating, sleeping, coughing, everything. My husband had an enormous amount of acid and was refluxing all the way up to his larynx. The standard course of treatment from the GI doctor included a one-a-day medication that did not last the full 24 hours for my husband, so since he took it in the morning, it stopped working while he was sleeping,in the worst position for reflux to again attack the esophagus that was trying to heal all day.

Within a couple of days of meeting Dr. Koufman, my husband was on the strict phase of the diet. It wasn't easy since he was previously working in the wine trade and had to completely stop drinking wine, coffee, pretty much everything except water, milk, aloe juice and camomile tea. She also changed his medications to better control the condition over 24 hours. Within about 3 weeks, he started feeling noticeably better. After a couple of months, he went back for more tests and his condition had improved dramatically. This all happened before the book was published and when it came out he was so excited by the recipes. What a difference it has made to be able to enjoy gourmet-style food after months of just obeying a list of forbidden foods. Now his condition has almost completely reversed, he has lost 35 pounds, and he is able to start adding things back in, like Gala apples.

Although a life-threatening disease is never a good thing, this experience has changed life for our entire family. Dr. Koufman's care and now her invaluable book have not only turned around my husband's condition and allowed him to take charge of his health, but the delicious recipes have allowed him to enjoy food again without feeling like he is stuck with a life-sentence of bland.

Excellent book for real results

Started with difficulty swallowing and tons of mucus in the throat. Went to see an ENT specialist, was proscribed Prilosec and told to come back in a month, diagnosis was LPR, some larynx swelling. Dropped 10 pounds in the meantime (was not overweight to begin with). Decided to forego the pills and instead bought the book. A week later no difficulty swallowing and no mucus. I am sticking to this book and diet! Yes, there are things you have to give up - I love cooking and love food, my garden is full of tomatoes and japalenos and this season they are producing! :( Oh well, what's more important? Also made the basic changes - elevated the head of the bed and stopped eating after 7 PM every day - the latter was one of my main problems - we used to eat dinner at 9 or 10 o'clock at night! While my diet was pretty decent, after eating the diet from the book, I realize how acidic my diet was! Anyways, the book is spot on.

Paul B. Armstrong is Professor of English and former Dean of the College at Brown University. He was previously a professor and a dean at the University of Oregon and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has also taught at the University of Copenhagen, Georgia Institute of Technology, the Free University of Berlin, the University of Virginia, and the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the VisualArts. Conrad, As Fine As It Gets

There is no point in lavishing superlatives on this famous story, told (so it is alleged) by "Marlow" -- an alter ego of Conrad himself -- during a long night on a boat in the Thames estuary. The story is filled with ambiguity about Marlow's earlier trip up the Congo River to visit an ivory-collecting station run by a ruthless agent named Kurtz. The ambiguity is on a number of fundamental levels as Conrad confronts basic internal contradictions of the colonial regime.

The Norton Critical Edition is much the best if you really want to explore these multiple layers. It presents both extensive documentary evidence on the colonial regime, and a generous selection of later critical reactions, including Achebe's famous attack on Conrad as a racist, plus a large number of answers to that attack. It is also very helpful to have a set of photographs of Conrad's own trip up the Congo.

One thing I would say is that is is now hard to read Heart of Darkness without remembering the movie Apocalypse Now, which is a sort of free-form adaptation. But the original novel is much subtler, and certainly the style of it is also vastly more sophisticated. In particular, one has to admire the clever way that Conrad undermines the credibility of Marlow by having him tell two huge lies in the last pages. We are left to make up our own minds about what to believe and how to evaluate what we believe. It is an enduring challenge.

Dated in some aspects but a lot of the themes are still relevant

I had seen this title and Conrad's name coined constantly through other mediums before I actually decided to read this. I wasn't really pressed on until I came across a lecture by Chinua Achebe, an African author, who claimed that Heart of Darkness and Conrad were racist. Nothing like some controversy to inadvertently give attention to what your actually protesting eh? His views on Conrad though reminded me of my own on Mark Twain though. I don't like Twain, I think he was a racist despite being hailed constantly by English teachers I've known. I would have thought the same if I hadn't come across his views on American Indians. He called us "scum of the earth" and other things. Statements he never retracted apparently. It didn't stop me from reading Twain which I have done but It didn't impress me. So I can actually somewhat understand Achebe's qualms but there turned out to be more to the Heart of Darkness than he would have some believe.

From what I understand this short work is heavily based on Conrad's own experiences from what he saw in the Congo Free State, something that would go on to effect his health and stability as it does for the character of the book Marlow. Marlow is a young man from England. Hungry for adventure on a steam boat in the dark continent. He manages to land a job with a company that is based on the Congo. So now the captain of his own tug boat he goes into Africa only to bare witness to the acts of the corporation he works for. Lines of naked bony natives in chains are led into mine shafts by uniformed men, massive tracts of the jungle are slashed and burned for bits of ivory, while starving slaves are left to die on the banks of the river. If this is progress then humanity is doomed it seems. But Marlow isn't there to gawk instead he's sent down river to track down and find a company agent, Mr Kurtz.

Kurtz seems to be a golden boy of the company. His superiors praise him, so does his family and friends. He is like the embodiment of European ideals, superior in every way to the savages but as Marlowe goes down the river and further into the dark jungles he learns more about this man and his troubling nature. Despite his superior stock and civilized morals Kurtz had quite literally "gone native". It can be looked at in various ways. A disturbing indictment of greed and imperialism. A look at the self destructive nature of humanity or civilization in general. While the book was good in the respects of allegory its still very archaic. His writing can drag in certain parts and feels pretty dated. But it's Conrad's depictions of the natives stands out above all of them. They have almost no actual culture, they prance around fires with grass skirts and bones in their noses; and the description of the witch woman feels like it was torn right out of a pulp magazine. Still though I think the themes of the book and overall message trump these bits but some may just find them distasteful.

In the end I actually liked Heart of Darkness but it definitely is racist in some parts. Conrad may have been disgusted with the Congo Free State, he may have been against imperialism, but he still saw the Africans as a lesser people. Still one can't really indict a man on views that were otherwise very common in his time. Compared to others from the same period Conrad was definitely a progressive. The book is pretty powerful and it had a strong message of anti-imperialism before it was beaten to death later on. In the end it's all a matter of taste. I liked it, its well written, not long, and it may dwell in the back of your head for a while. It left me wondering whether or not Kurtz's final message "exterminate the brutes" was meant for the natives or mankind in general.

An extended metaphor for human evil

The HEART OF DARKNESS is a frame story. The outside frame consists of four men sailing on the Thames on a boat called the "Nellie."The narrator of this part of the story, one of the four men, turns the story over to one of the other men, Marlow, who speaks for most of this short novel. He describes how he was hired by a company trading in ivory to retrieve one of their agents from the heart of the Congo--a man named Kurtz.

Before Marlow describes his adventure, the Thames is identified as the river used by the Romans when they came to subjugate and exploit the barbaric tribes living in what would eventually be called England. This brilliant irony is meant to parallel the contemporary Europeans and their exploitation of the blacks in the Congo to the Romans and the ancient English.

Marlow's spoken account describes a descent into darkness. The superior technology of the European company (guns, steamboat, and machines) is used to exploit the ivory trade and subjugate the natives--who are variously referred to as savages, cannibals, devils, and the "N" word. I couldn't disagree more with those who claim that this novella is racist. It is a depiction of racism--much like HUCKLEBERRY FINN--at the end of the 19th century in Europe.

When Marlow eventually finds Kurtz, after a harrowing steamboat trip down the Congo, he is horrified. The man has made himself into a god for the natives, has killed and beheaded enemy tribesmen, and essentially become more savage than the savages. The interior of the Congo is literally the heart of darkness (the impenetrable, foreboding jungle), Kurtz has a heart of darkness, and the allusion to the Romans at the outset suggests that all humanity possesses this defect, which shows up in generation after generation. I found the novel to be an inspired indictment of European colonialism and an extended metaphor for human evil.

Dying to Let You Know the Truth

Depending on which person you ask, death can be viewed as a terrifying inevitability or a peaceful denouement to a long and difficult journey. This book seeks to ameliorate your fears about the afterlife by consulting those who have already passed on. I have never read a book quite like this, and I'm sure that I'll never read a book like it again. It is an uplifting account of the peace found beyond the grave and how those who are no longer alive have the best advice for the living. I think it's easy to take life for granted, but this book really helps us put things into perspective. It's certainly helped me lead a more mindful and powerful life.

I've complemented this book with Manifestation Magic by Alvin Huang and Chris D'Cruz. If Mike Dooley's book is an inspiration for leading a better life, then Manifestation Magic is the blueprint for how to do it. It talks about the important things we are all looking to achieve like wealth, health, happiness, and stability in our relationships. It gives you a clear, concise guideline for how to manifest positivity into your life. The principles outlined in the book can be practiced by literally anyone, and I have certainly used them to my advantage. As a 34 year-old single mother of 3, I have never been happier, healthier, and more in control of financial future.

Having both these books in your library is a must if you ask me. I have benefitted greatly from the wisdom found in The Top Ten Things Dead People Want to Tell YOU and Manifestation Magic. I have taken control of my own destiny by harnessing the power of my brain and everything around me. I cannot tell you how impactful these books have been on my life. I have recommended these books to everyone I've come across, and I'll do the same for anyone reading this review.

Enjoyed it 3/5 of the Time

I give this 3 stars, because it resonated with me about 3/5 of the time. The earlier chapters were a refreshing take on the "you are what you think" philosophy a la The Secret. I enjoy Mike's take much more than the Secret, which I found to be too kumbaya/woo woo and focused on material abundance. Even though I have heard similar ideas before, I really enjoyed Mike's approach and I think it was correct to have him read his own book in the audio CD version I purchased.

However, the later chapters started to get a little too preachy/cultish for me. It went from "you are what you think" to "it's all you're own fault that you have a crummy life". In particular, the final chapter sounded a lot like the proselytizing of organized religion (which Mike bashes repeatedly throughout the book in an offhand way) in that he repeatedly talks about people "not being ready to hear the message". Along the lines of, if you disagree with us, you just haven't seen the light. Classic approach of organized religion and cults for millennia.

I've been a reader of TUT daily emails for over a year now and enjoy them immensely, but Mike lost me on much of the later material. In particular, the discussion about true evil in the world not existing was a bit hard to swallow. For example, it's hard for me to imagine that the soul of a 4 year old girl that is brutally molested and murdered (my example, not Mike's) somehow came back to Earth to have that be her experience.

Also, there is a limit to "thoughts become things". Mike does present some practical reasoning about this. He mentions that just because you think about something all of the time, it doesn't guarantee it will happen in this lifetime or in the way you think about this. For this alone, his book is a vast improvement over The Secret, which I thought implied you can just wish yourself to riches and abundance.

I was really looking forward to this book and expected I would give it 5 stars given my experience with TUT emails. But it went from very motivating and enjoyable in the beginning to a revivalist Sunday meeting feel towards the end.

A book to soothe your soul

I read a lot of books, but rarely am I moved to tears as I was with this wonderful book. I lost both an aunt and uncle to cancer in the past six months. This book most certainly soothed my soul and helped me find answers to questions that came up while witnessing my relatives' dying process. I also feel like I finally got confirmation on afterlife for my beloved fur baby who passed away 2 years ago. Even if you aren't experiencing any type of grief or loss, the wisdom contained in this book is phenomenal. I couldn't put the book down and want to read it a 2nd time!

This book is a must-have for Pusheen lovers!

"I Am Pusheen the Cat" contains the adorable illustrations of Pusheen living her life, as an every-cat. If you're not familiar with Pusheen, she is a grey tabby cat whose name translates from Irish Gaelic to "kitten". She has a zest for adventure and an equal love of food.

Many of the stories and comics, featuring Pusheen and occasionally her sister Stormy, are comics that long-time Pusheen fans will no doubt recount with joy for the second (or third, or fourth...) time. Newcomers to Pusheen will undoubtedly be enchanted with her all the same from the collection in this book.

The quality of the book itself is superb, and the pricing is on par as such. "I Am Pusheen the Cat" is a fantastic book to share with all ages. This book is perfectly Pusheen.

I have to confess that I wasn't familiar with Pusheen before I saw one of my friends reading this book on Goodreads. She mentioned that the book was available for reviewers on netgalley and after spending about half an hour browsing through the Pusheen the cat website I couldn't resist requesting a copy. I am a sucker for cute cat pictures and videos, I have all of the Simon's Cat books and regularly flick through them when I need something to make me smile so after giggling my way through the most popular posts on the website I knew I'd enjoy this book too.

I will say that this is the kind of book that I prefer to buy in print rather than in ebook. In my opinion the images never look as good on an ereader or computer screen and this is the style of book I like to be able to just pick up and open at a random page when I need something to brighten up my day. I'm pretty sure I'll be buying myself a print copy of this to add to my collection.

I was slightly disappointed that so many of the cartoons were ones I had already come across though. I would say that the majority were ones I'd seen previously on the website and like I already said I've only visited the site once. I think people who have been following the site for years might find that even more disappointing than I did. Having said that if you're new to Pusheen or a super fan of the cartoons then I'm sure the pictures will still make you smile. Pusheen is incredibly cute and reminded me a lot of my cats with her obsession with food and sleeping.

This book is a comic like book that is about the cat Pusheen and her adventures through her kitty life. This book is very easy to read and would be great for children. This little book had the cute meter overflowing with cute and funny antics that Pusheen got herself into. The book is also very insightful in an educational way about real cats and how they should be treated and respected.

I loved this book and I might even buy a copy of it to have in my my collection on my bookshelf (has only a digital copy). This book was EXTREMELY cute and funny and I know kids and adults would love it. Everyone needs a little Pusheen in their lives!

About the Author
Rene Goscinny was born in Paris in 1926, and spent most of his childhood in Argentina, before eventually moving to Paris in 1951. He died in 1977. Albert Uderzo was born in 1927 in a small village in Marne, France. He met Rene Goscinny in 1951 and on 29 October 1959 their most famous creation, Asterix,made his first appearance on page 20 of PILOTE. ASTERIX THE GAUL, their first album, was published in 1961 and there have now been 35 Asterix albums. Illustrator Didier Conrad was born in Marseille in 1959. He moved to America after his style got him noticed by Disney and Dreamworks, and in 1996 he designed the characters and storyboard for the 2000 animated film THE ROAD TO EL DORADO.Jean-Yves Ferri lives in the Ariège area of south-western France. Before writing the 35th Asterix album, he worked on the famous series Le Retour à la Terre, as well as the adventures of a police officer named Aimé Lacapelle.

Nice but not great

As fan of Asterix series i must get every release, therefore i got this one.
The story line feels repeated in many earlier ones, the jokes are ok but not so funny.
I cant say dont buy it, actually pls do, but dont expect great one.

This is a brand new Asterix tale which brought back memories of reading this series when I was little! Despite being a girly girl (something I'm even more into now) Asterix was somethig I loved despite there being barely any girls in it. It's a funny series, filled with humor which starts with someone's name. For example Cacophonix the bard is terrible at singing, so much so he frequently gets tied up and beaten up to save everyone's sanity. However, he is a secret weapon Asterix and co unleash on their enemies.

There are continuous jokes and conceptswhich reoccur in most books including this one. For example Obelix is forever annoyed that he isn't allowed any potion because he fell into a vat when he was a baby, which explains his superhuman strength. Boars appear in every story which happen to be Obelix's favourite food. There's always a feast, usually in the Gaul's village, at the end of the
story including this one. Also the village chief is frequently berated by his wife, among other incidents which I've forgotten. There are more subtle and obvious reoccurrences which readers familiar of the series will pick up on, but most of the humour even first time readers will love.

Everything which makes Asterix Asterix is in this latest book. It's been years since I read one so I haven't noticed a difference by having a different author and illustrator to the earlier volumes. There's plenty of historical themes to explore, some naturally have a lot of artistic licence, but I think Asterix played a small part in my love of the ancient world. Go check it out!
