Good information on probiotic KEFIR

This little e-book is chock-full of great information on caring for kefir grains (both dairy and water) as well as complete instructions for making the kefir, for resting the grains and even for drying the grains to store for use later on. There is a very cool section on history of kefir and how it came to be available to modernity. The end of the book also has some uncommon recipes for kefir cheese. This is a great book to encourage non-kefir folks to give it a try!

Good information

I really liked this book. I have been excited to try fermented foods after realizing that a high percentage of our immune system is in our intestinal tract. This book is easy to understand and basic--just what I needed. I have ordered my inexpensive kefir grains and they arrive tomorrow, so I will make my first batch then. So now I'm updating this review a month later. I love my kefir experience and am so glad that I got this book. I refer to it often, and am really happy about the information in it. We all feel better since we are drinking the Kefir, even my 89 year old mother-in-law! She had serious elimination problems before, and now doesn't. She really believes in Kefir, now, too!

I've been on the Raw Vegan Food path, on and off for a while now...

And whilst I noticed afew of the comments, about how easily it is available in the shops, yes it is, but unless you're made of money it's very difficult to eat this way long-term, Unless you start at home! ~I don't know about you, but it isn't cheap buying these kinds of products at health food stores, secondly the product isn't nearly as refreshing or staisfying as making it yourself!

I noticed since the summer of 2011, that the more cultured foods, yogurts, and kefirs I consumed on a regular basis, my energy really did go through the roof, and I felt allot more supple and balanced in the overall health arena, that I didn't necessarily really feel was there before, so I've definitely been looking at more ways to top-up! lol

I used to enjoy the occasional bowl of 'ice-cream', and a 'lollypop' here 'n' there, but noticed I would get a thrush like coating on my tongue, (I know yuk right?), and was later told by a friend it was an imbalance of the Candida albicans, a direct result of too much processed sugar entering the body, So I must have been very sensitive to it.

So that was mainly my reason for picking up this little unassuming guide, and see if I could add to my already growing library (and health). I found the readability good, its ease of use, and actual recipes to be quite helpful. I especially liked the way the author so honestly talked about 'pasteurization', that in some cases, kills 99.9999% of viable micro-organisms so necessary for healthy digestion.

I really also Loved! by the way, the story the author tells us about; how Kefir truly came to be about, and was really interesting to say the least! I would have had, No Idea about that, had I not read it here in this book!

I loved the recipe for 'Coconut Milk Kefir', it turned out Great! on only my first try! ~it was quite easy to follow the authors well-thought-out instructions, and most of the ingredients can just as easily be found in your local supermarkets or grocery stores. Believe it or not, there's actually something in this book that is sooo Hard to find in other books of this nature, and that is the: "Kefir Troublshooting" Section?? LOL! Yes, there's actually a section which holds you by the hands if you find yourself crying over 'spilt milk', and believe me ! it does happen, it takes a few tries for Most people to get the delicate balance Right! the first time, though I was lucky, and pretty much knew what I was doing, but for any one else just starting-out, this section proves invaluable to anyone looking to begin hand-making cultured Kefir's at home.

The Recipes Are Also Pretty Good; So Far I've tried The 'Kream Soda', and the 'Cranberry Kefir', after making my Original batch, the Results were quite pleasing, and you can Vary the amount of 'Tang' you're after. Yum!

This is definitely a comprehensive, yet simple, and easy to follow 'A-Z' Guide on starting your very-own 'Kefir Cocktail Center' at Home, Everyone's Gonna Want One! Thoroughly Recommended!

Pros: Very Easy To Follow Instructions, and Great Recipes!
Cons: Maybe Too Much Choice! LOL! ~You'll have to Decide on Which Flavor You MOST Desire!

GREAT BOOK

I really enjoyed this book, especially because it has a Cd in the back cover with all the pdf files of pictures and dwg files of CAD drawings for the floor plans of each project.

The only downside is that there is only 2 pictures per project, but on the other hand it does have all the main architects of the Twentieth Century.

Fantastic resource for students

This is a tremendous compendium of guess what--key houses. What's initially impressive are the author's editorial choices. The important, canonical, expected houses are here, (Farnsworth, Villa Savoye, Fallingwater, Aalto, Kahn, Gropius, Eames are represented), but there are many pleasant and welcome surprises, like the Wittgenstein house and the rotating Villa Girasole. Important choices you'd expect to be left out, like the Melnikov house or the Shodhan house, are included, so, along with the CD, which may have some flaws or limitations, nonetheless gives architecture students an amazing archive of case study material at their fingertips. Highly recommended.

Important examples missing | British bias | selections from the end of the 20th century less convincing, over represented.

Interesting but disappointing. Naturally, a book like this is bound to attract controversy and invite others to challenge the choices made. The author describes the book as derived from the artistic canon of 20th century houses, meaning the houses that are the most famous, well known and influential... so it's a worth controversy. Maybe the most valuable aspect of the book is that it shapes a discussion of what should be included in the canon of 20th century architecture. That said, I thought there were too many biases shaping the list that the author should have challenged in his own mind as he developed this book. Hence three stars instead of four.

The biases that seem to be at work here: 1. A British bias...a good number of British houses included would not be selected by an author who was not British or did not have a long list of books on British architecture to his credit. 2. A late 20th century bias...the houses from the end of the century are naturally less convincing and will be very different for any architectural historian writing the same book 100 years from now. 3. A modern architecture bias...as is often said, history is written by the winners and the polemicists of modern architecture enforced a ban on the serious consideration of the non-modern despite the fact that architecture other than modern was what prominent architects were building during the first half of the 20th century. The only exception to this tyranny, in this book, is a house by Lutyens (every modern architects favorite historicist.)

The two obvious omissions from the book that occur to me are the Palais Stoclet, Brussels by Josef Hoffman and the Walter L. Dodge House, Los Angeles by Irving Gill. To me these seem like glaring omissions, but other readers will, no doubt, have their own to offer.

I have been a BMT nurse for four years, working with MM for seven. This is very thorough and concise, book is new, but was not wrapped, so cover was not perfect, but this is going into a backpack and will be used a lot.

This is an awesome e-book, hilarious and insightful. The cover art is amazing, the writing fast and furious. What's better than to remember the good old days of the fabulous 1980s reading about the greatest action movies of all time? Forget the current slew of kid friendly cgi heavy wussy films and go back to the times of spine-ripping adventure. Body oil and glistening pecks await.

Ruthless Guide

I love Arnold, but I think this book could have been more well rounded in terms of the stars. There are five or six reviews of Arnold movies, but only one JCVD movie. But, on the whole, it was a funny and insightful book that covered all of the bases you’d want. The Over The Top review and a couple of others had me literally laughing out loud. Many of the classics were covered, but some were left out. Hopefully they appear in a future volume. There were also a lot of lesser known films that I’d now like to track down at some point. Everything is broken down into digestible parts that keep things flowing. For example, a couple of movies are covered, then there’s an essay about Cynthia Rothrock, then a couple more movies and a list of the best weapons ever used in 80s action movies, and so on. I was definitely entertained. I finished the whole thing in two sittings.

These are some of my favorite movies. Like the book says, they are really entertaining, fun and funny on their own terms. But then, they can also be campy and unintentionally hilarious. This book really captures that. Reading the book, you get a lot of nostalgia, re-experiencing some of these great movies and what made them great. But there’s also the broader perspective, that allows you to laugh at their ridiculous side. So, like the movies themselves, the book is a lot of fun.

About the Author

Wilda Rinehart Gardner received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi. After working as a staff nurse and charge nurse, she became a public health nurse and served in that capacity for a number of years. In 1975, she received her nurse practitioner certification in the area of obstetrics-gynecology from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. In 1979, she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Mississippi University for Women. In 1980, she completed her Master of Science degree in Nursing from the same university and accepted a faculty position at Northeast Mississippi Community College, where she taught medical-surgical nursing and maternal-newborn nursing. In 1982, she founded Rinehart and Associates Nursing Consultants. For the past 26 years, she and her associates have worked with nursing graduates and schools of nursing to assist graduates to pass the National Council Licensure Exam for Nursing. She has also worked as a curriculum consultant with faculty to improve test construction. Ms. Rinehart has served as a convention speaker throughout the southeastern United States and as a reviewer of medical-surgical and obstetric texts. She has co-authored materials used in seminars presented by Rinehart and Associates Nursing Review.

Dr. Diann Sloan received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Northeast Mississippi Community College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Mississippi, and a Master of Science degree in Nursing from Mississippi University for Women. In addition to her nursing degrees, she holds a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Georgia State University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education, with minors in both Psychology and Educational Psychology, from Mississippi State University. She has completed additional graduate studies in healthcare administration at Western New England College and the University of Mississippi. Dr. Sloan has taught pediatric nursing, psychiatric mental health nursing, and medical-surgical nursing in both associate degree and baccalaureate nursing programs. As a member of Rinehart and Associates Nursing Review, Dr. Sloan has conducted test construction workshops for faculty and nursing review seminars for both registered and practical nurse graduates. She has co-authored materials used in the item-writing workshops for nursing faculty and Rinehart and Associates Nursing Review. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society.

Clara Hurd received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi (1975). Her experiences in nursing are clinically based, having served as a staff nurse in medical-surgical nursing. She has worked as an oncology, intensive care, orthopedic, neurological, and pediatric nurse. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama, and her Master of Science degree in Nursing from the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi. Ms. Hurd is a certified nurse educator. She currently serves as a nurse educator consultant and an independent contractor. Ms. Hurd has taught in both associate degree and baccalaureate degree nursing programs. She was a faculty member of Mississippi University for Women; Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee; Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee; and Northeast Mississippi Community College. Ms. Hurd joined Rinehart and Associates in 1993. She has worked with students in preparing for the National Council Licensure Exam and with faculty as a consultant in writing test items. Ms. Hurd has also been a presenter at nursing conventions on various topics, including itemwriting for nursing faculty. Her primary professional goal is to prepare the student and graduatefor excellence in the delivery of healthcare.

I passed my NCLEX

I did very well in class, but this book filled in a lot of gaps in certain subjects. This is the comprehensive version but it isn't so detailed that it makes you feel like you're just going through your nursing textbook again. I felt as though it had just the right information to help me link disorder with diagnostic with treatments/medications. The CD that comes with the book has a good system to help you learn why you're answering question wrong or right. I'd recommend this book for sure, just read it before doing the CD, I did it backwards and it made the CD much harder... I passed my NCLEX in 85 questions in little over an hour.

Highly Recommend--It's like Cliff-notes for NCLEX-PN

I initially tried the kindle sample for this book after seeing a fellow classmate with it. I was on the fence about whether to buy it because my NCLEX-PN date was quickly approaching. After reading the sample, I decided that it would be worth purchasing, and that I would buy it in the book format so that it was easier to do the questions at the end of the chapters and the practice quizzes. I purchased it on 1/5/15 and was scheduled to take the boards on 1/24/15. I highly recommend this book! It's like the cliff notes version of what you need to know for the boards. The book said to allow for at least 2 weeks to study, which I did. I tried to do a chapter a night for review, but sometimes did more since some chapters are shorter than others. The tear out sheet was also helpful for last minute reviews as I was waiting to take the boards. I passed the NCLEX on my first try with 85 questions (which is the minimum number of questions). I will be purchasing the NCLEX-RN when I am ready to take those boards.

I brought this book 8/31/14 the book came early .... I studying the day I recieve it which was 9/3/14...this book fit perfectly in my purse it went everywhere with me, I took my Nclex-pn on 11/21/14 and passed. This book has great tips it get to the point and gives great break down on symptoms of diseases, labs, and treatments. It comes with a whole bunch of questions I like their practice questions because in some of the other nclex books/cd-rom the same questions are repeated over and over again and you start to memorize them instead of learning why this is the rational.

Finally an option book to be proud of

Mr. Walker is clear and concise in his depiction of how the options markets work. He details various strategies and makes options investing understandable to those new to it.
In my 11 years as a futures investor, broker, and author, I have never seen someone with as much grasp of options investing as Mr.Walker and have the capability to explain it.

Anyone Can Understand !

Yes, As a beginner I can confidently say I know what option is, it's uses and the risk involve. The Author did not only explain the principle but gave practicable example everyone can relate to. All in simple and plain English, you don't need to have been to a school of economy to know what an option is. With the help of this book, I can't look stupid when others uses terminologies relating to option. Keep up the good work Joseph.

My kid willingly read it!

I haven't read it, but my son, a ten year old who acts like a grumpy teenager who never wants to read ended up reading the whole book in a weekend. He actually sat down at the table just to read this book. I was amazed. It is fairly short and the print is a lot bigger then an adult book, but it got him to read! He now decided that it was such a good book he is reading the original Jurassic Park; a much bigger and harder book. I don't think he'd have tried that without this book. He said it is completely true to the movie in every way. The color pictures in the middle are of good quality as well. Seems my son liked that it was "special edition" so I told him it cost $100. Now he pampers it like nothing I have ever seen him pamper before. I am amazed that by getting the right book, your kid will actually read.

Good read for younger readers

To start off the book is very nice for a junior novel, it has 16 pages of pictures from the movie and is also a hard cover with a nice glossy finish. The story follows the movie quite well unlike the Jurassic Park 3 Junior novel which had multiple scenes that wasn't in the movie at all, this one only had one. And it actually has the ending unlike the Avengers Age of Ultron junior novel which left out 1/3 of the movie. The storyline picks up 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park, John Hammond has passed away and Simon Massarani has built the dinosaur park Hammond had dreamed of, something quite odd has happened and people have grown tired of the Dinosaurs. So Claire the park manager and Simon asks Dr Henry Wu to create a new dinosaur that will truly frighten the park visitors. They create the Indominus rex, and it escapes just when Claire's nephews Zach and Gray arrive at the park and it's up to Claire and Owen (a raptor trainer) to rescue them. Over all not a bad read, I finished it within an hour and a half, as it is only 128 pages. The rating is more for it not being at my reading level which is to be expected as it is a junior novel. That being said it is the best junior novel to date that I have read and I recommend it for younger readers who are fans of dinosaurs or jurassic park. My rating 6.0/10.0

In 1993, Scott Smith wowed readers with his stunning debut thriller, A Simple Plan. Thirteen years later, he spooked us again with The Ruins, a horror-thriller about four Americans traveling in Mexico who stumble across a nightmare in the jungle.

The set-up for Joe Hill's novel, Heart-Shaped Box, is appealingly simple. Jude Coyne, an aging rock star, buys himself a dead man's suit. He acquires it online, lured by the promise that the dead man's ghost will be included in his purchase. Jude thinks this is a joke, of course. He also assumes the seller is a stranger. We soon discover that he's wrong on both counts, however, and from this point on the story moves with an exhilarating urgency. Jude wants the ghost gone; the ghost wants Jude dead. We watch, chapter-by-chapter, as they battle for survival. "Watch" is the appropriate word, too, because this is an extremely visual book. Hill's prose is lean and precise, and he renders Jude's world with impressive confidence. It feels solid, every detail both correct and fresh. And this physicality provides a firm platform for the book's otherworldly happenings, which seem all the more frightening for being so securely grounded.

Hill has a flawless sense of pacing. His narrative never flags, nor does it ever move so quickly as to outrun itself. And one can sense his literary ambition pushing at the margins of the genre. There are times when his writing, for all its spare efficiency, seems to jump away from him, stopping one small step short of poetry. An e-mail to Jude from the ghost (trust me, it's not as absurd as it sounds) could even pass for something ee cummings might've written, in an especially morbid mood. And toward the end of the book, when Hill describes a trip down death's "night road" in a '65 Mustang, the passage has a startlingly lyrical beauty.

The story's horror ultimately has as much to do with Jude Coyne's past--his mistakes, abandonments and betrayals--as with anything supernatural. Jude has caused a lot of pain over the years, moving through life with a carelessness that verges on the callous. His battle with the ghost brings this behavior into sharp relief, forcing him to reflect upon his own capacity for cruelty. This dawning self-awareness leavens the book's bleakness and gore (and it is delightfully gory in places) with an unexpected sweetness. Despite our initial impression, Jude is gradually revealed--both to himself and the reader--as an essentially decent, even kind man. It's this kindness, this fledgling ability to love and be loved, that will ultimately be of crucial consequence in his death struggle with the ghost. And it's what makes Hill's debut not only well-written and terrifying, but also--as it draws to its close--surprisingly moving. So go ahead, take a chance, and open his Heart-Shaped Box. That is what rock-star Judas Coyne does, thinking it will be a laugh, fun for his "sick-o" collection of such things. It seems a random buy, but Judas soon learns that it is anything but. This particular ghost is one Craddock McDermott, step-father to recent suicide victim and boy, is he cranky. He demands revenge for his step-daughter’s death, which he blames on Judas’s shabby treatment of her.

Or is he after something else?

There are Amazon readers who will give you a better plot summary. Don't read them too closely because Joe Hill provides plenty of fun surprises. Heart-Shaped Box is a true spine-tingler. I don’t use that hyphenated word much anymore. We have seen and read it all, haven't we? But right away, in the first chapter, there was a subtle line that made the hairs on the back of my neck go up in a way I haven't experienced since I first discovered great horror as a teenager.

Hill writes with a sure hand. The prose is compelling. Like most memorable tales of horror, this book is more about redemption than scary moments--though Heart-Shaped Box has plenty of scares. They are visceral, shocking and very well done. The characters are flawed and real. The father-son relationship adds texture and surprising poignancy.

So here's the thing. My guess is, you won’t find a ghost to buy online, but if you read the Heart-Shaped Box, you will be getting something that will haunt you and startle you and stay with you and yes, visit you in your dreams.

This first novel by Hill, the second son of Stephen King, provides the perfect raw material for Lang to create an auditory world so convincing that the listener will feel as if they have seen a film by the time they are through. The complex plot can be simply stated: as a lark, retired heavy metal star Judas Coyne buys a haunted suit online. The ghost turns out to be the very angry stepfather of an ex-groupie/lover of Coyne's who killed herself after he sent her away. The relentless ghost is there to kill Judas and anyone who tries to help him. Lang's superb narration is nearly hypnotic in its calm delivery, perfect as backdrop for the action and horror that surrounds it. His Coyne is reminiscent of John Goodman, deep and understated, with a foundation of confidence with a barely perceptible trace of a Southern accent. Each disk starts with a bit of Nine Inch Nails–ish heavy haunting electronica, an ideal tone setter for the journey.

Dull and Lifeless

I had to force myself to finish it! I found this book so lifeless and dull. The characters are so one dimensional and cliche, which makes it impossible to care for any of them. I wanted to give up on this book so many times even though I had such high hopes for it when I started it. This book had no redeeming qualities and I'm extremely confused as to how it got so many good reviews. When I began the book I was just looking for a creepy book to pass the time and the reviews I read led me to believe this book would be perfect, but I found myself starting to just skim the pages toward the middle of the book and I couldn't wait to be done with it and forget about it forever. The first 100 pages or so were just creepy enough that I believed the book would be worth while, but as the book continued it drudged on with meaningless plot twists with no depth or scares.

Too much author, not enough story.

As a thriller or horror tale, Heart Shaped Box compares to the sort of low budget movies you might have seen populating the HBO schedule years back. With a short-list of fairly pedestrian, two dimensional characters, Joe Hill takes what begins as a reasonably intriguing showdown against isolation and the supernatural (very similar to his father's The Shining) into a superficially introspective road chase with ghosts driving trucks, muscle cars and the like.

What Joe Hill dedicates an alarming amount of his story to is a rather pronounced dislike for all things southern. The story is peppered with poor hillbilly accents, snake-handling preachers, child molesting car salesmen, wife beating pig farmers...all vocally tied by the author to a viewpoint and culture he clearly has strong issues with. The authors voice is very strong throughout this novel, so much so that it overwhelms what little effectiveness it may have had. His characters are mostly empty and unsympathetic. The arc of their journey takes them on the predictable course from self-absorbed, self-loathing societal rejects to loving disney heroes. It's not terribly believable. He is very inconsistent on the rules by which his "villain" lives by, and consequently robs much of the suspense from the story by its end. Like most B-grade horror, it's distracting enough to get through but as the story reached its conclusion, I was very ready for it to be over.

Hill borrows a lot from his father. From his attempt to mix personal demons with real ones, to his touches of Lovecraftian absurdity to his vocal socio-political viewpoint, Hill has tools. He just doesn't employ them nearly as well. The story is a good idea and like most ideas, a simple one. Hill knows how to take it a certain part of the way. Unfortunately, he runs out of gas and in the end we get too much Joe Hill and not enough book.

Compelling story

I was introduced to Joe Hill with "Throttle," and liked the story immensely. This one was quite different, except for one thing: it also has a good moral, or message, if you will. This man knows how to tell a story. As with life, it wasn't excessively happy, and bad things happen. I believe that real life is (or often can be) more horrifying than the supernatural - that is certainly the case in this book. Of course, I do not discount that so-called supernatural things exist. All the characters are well fleshed out, even those that play bit parts in the story. None of them are perfect, and they all have made mistakes, just like real people. There are a few characters who seem to be all bad, but I suppose there are also real people like that. This is a pretty damned scary ghost story, so if that kind of thing bothers you (along with some violence and profanity), you might want to find a different author. I will definitely be checking out his other books!
