About the Author
James C. Kaufman, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology at the California State University at San Bernardino, where he directs the Learning Research Institute. Dr Kaufman's research focuses on the nurturance, structure and assessment of creativity. He is the author or editor of more than 200 publications, including 22 books either published or in press. These books include Creativity 101 (2009), Essentials of Creativity Assessment (with Jonathan Plucker and John Baer, 2008) and The International Handbook of Creativity (with Robert J. Sternberg, 2006). His research has been featured on CNN, NPR and the BBC and in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and New Yorker. Kaufman is a founding co-editor of the official journal for the American Psychological Association's Division 10, Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts. He is also the associate editor of Psychological Assessment and the Journal of Creative Behavior, the editor of the International Journal of Creativity and Problem Solving and the series editor of the Psych 101 series. He received the 2003 Daniel E. Berlyne Award from APA's Division 10, the 2008 E. Paul Torrance Award from the National Association of Gifted Children, and the 2009 Early Career Research Award from the Western Psychological Association.

COVERS WELL NARROW GROUND

Creativity may well be the most important phenomenon in human history and the most interesting process of the mind. Therefore, one could expect a comprehensive handbook on creativity to provide insights into the nature of social and individual creativity, or explain why such insights are missing. This is not done in the 489 dense pages of the book. Instead, well covered are creativity and education, with emphasis on research methods and empiric findings based mainly of study of pupils and students. Also marginally included are some discussions on creativity at the work place and on individuals with peak creativity.
But main issues are not taken up. Nothing on periods of peak social creativity, such as the golden age of Athens, the scientific and industrial revolution, and avant-garde art. Nothing on value changes, such as on slavery and human rights. And, while phases of creativity are discussed, such as incubation and ideation, nothing in the book provides a clue to the core processes of the mind producing in some persons radically new ideas.
All these non-findings are not really surprising. Understanding deep processes of the mind may require a higher-order mind. And the study of history and the social sciences have provided only partial conjecture on macro-changes related to leaps in creativity. But, if unable to provide insights into such crucial issues of creativity, the handbook should have explicitly discussed what is unknown and perhaps unknowable and be much more humble on what it covers.
To be added are lacunae on what is taken up in the book. Thus, nearly no convincing findings are provided on correlation between efforts to stimulate creativity of pupils and later life achievements. And, quite amazingly, the potentials of cyber-sphere for providing space, stimulation and scope for creativity do not receive due attention, despite their obvious importance for the young.
All this critique does not reduce the utility of the handbook and its high-quality chapters as a convenient summing up of what little is known on creativity. And the concluding chapter 24 does open up wider vistas. Still, taking into account that radical socio-political mega-creativity is urgently needed for coping with novel challenges facing the human species, the book demonstrates that the study of creativity itself urgently needs itself a quantum-leap in creativity.

The Floodgates are open again for Michael McDowell's BLACKWATER

The BLACKWATER serial novel was originally published in 1983 by Avon. This series was published in the midst of the 1980s Horror Boom. My hats off to Tough Time Publishing for introducing this serial novel to a new audience 30 years later. I am a big fan of horror and I remember reading this series when it was first published; eagerly awaiting each installment. And I get to relive these books a second time; again as a serial novel. I am huge collector of 1980s horror paperback (all in new condition) and I own all the Michael McDowell Avon novels; needless to say I am fan. The biggest compliment I can give this series is I will be purchasing the Limited Edition of the series to be published later this year by Centipede Press; retail is $250.00. You do not spend that kind of money on a set of books unless they are worth it. So, don't hesitate, join the deluge that is BLACKWATER!

Can't wait for the next installment.

A terrifically fun and creepy read, McDowell's style and tone evoke a horror novel from a simpler--but by no means less frightening--time. The characters are enigmatic and sometimes downright maddening. Their willingness to write off dramatic irony in a order to keep intact their way of life will have you shouting the equivalent of "don't open that door!" The setting in rural, early 20th century Alabama is as idyllic as it is claustrophobic. I can hardly wait for the rest of the series to come out!

Well-Written, Entertaining Supernatural Saga

Is this series flawed? Sure. You can't crank 'em out like MM did and not miss some problems. Still, there is much here to enjoy. McDowell's creation is very evocative of the part of Alabama he writes about (I used to live there), and his characters avoid for the most part becoming the one-dimensional "types" so typical of popular fiction.

The characters are all engagingly drawn, quite distinctly individual without clunky self-conscious quirks nailed to them and dragged around the room like you will often find in precious contemporary literary fiction. The characters sometime come off as movie characters, but no more than, say, a John Updike character does, or a Bellow character. They are graceful, cruel, funny, ambiguous, dramatic. We finish the series not know quite how to regard Elinor Caskey, the amphibious Lovecraftian creature that crawls out of the floodwaters and insinuates herself into the Caskey clan. At best, she amoral.

McDowell's prose is a treat to read. He is precise and elegant, a far better craftsman than most if not all of his better-known contemporaries.

In short, this series is a real treat. I read it when it first came out in the early 80's, 25 years ago. I remembered very little, except for a single image, really--the image that occurs near the beginning of the first volume when the preacher woman stumbles upon Elinor soaking in a pool of water--in her froglike state. I loved rediscovering this series.

SIM SEGAL, FSA, CERA, is President and founder of SimErgy Consulting, which provides ERM consulting services and executive education seminars. With twenty- five years of experience in measuring and managing risk, Segal is a globally-recognized ERM thought leader with experience in a variety of industry sectors, such as manufacturing, energy, entertainment, technology, services, telecommunications, banking, insurance, non-profit organizations, and government bodies. Prior to SimErgy, he led ERM consulting practices at Deloitte Consulting, Aon, and Towers Watson. Segal also serves as an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School, where he teaches an MBA/EMBA course on ERM. He has also led and co-authored ERM research studies.

Excellent book

I could not agree more with Dave Ingram, when he says, in the foreword of "The Corporate Value of Enterprise Risk Manager", that this could be the only ERM book you will ever need.

The book offers an integrated road map for risk management, written in a very comprehensive way, and I believe that every risk practitioners (beginner or experienced risk executive) will find some interesting and "fresh" material.

The book is also wide ranged, meaning that if you want theoretical concepts, you will find them, but it is also a very good "implementation guide".

Finally, I will stress that this is not only a book on ERM, but mainly on the corporate value of it.

The book of Sim Segal is highly recommendable.

A Starting Point for Value Based ERM

ERM practitioners have been striving for quite some time to build programs that measure risk in a quantitative manner, and that compares that risk back to management's appetite for risk taking. Sim Segal's book provides a practical methodology for a value based ERM program.

Sim Segal does an excellent job in the opening chapters laying out the argument for value-based ERM in any enterprise, not just financial services firms. He also discusses many pitfalls that often get in the way. Finally, he also discusses the greatest danger to quantifying risk... the black box highly sophisticated super model.
The black box model disrupts more than it helps. Business owners are challenged to have confidence and work to manage a model that lacks simple transparency. Sim Segal devotes a great deal to this concept and illustrates a methodology that provides simple transparency to risk modeling.

However, the author also takes the bold step to suggest that all risk within an enterprise can be calculated down to one single metric. This may be true, but this theory itself lacks a degree of practicality. Leaders still need a risk appetite statement and a small group of multiple measures that show the impact of their risk taking on the enterprise. Pure cash flow may not be the only measure of organizational performance for risk taking.

I highly recommend this book for any ERM practitioner or executive looking to understand that the future of ERM is not just the management of downside risk. Instead, it is also the optimization of risk taking within the enterprise for the greatest performance.

Balance of Practicality and Technical Rigor

The framework outlined in this book simply works and I know this from personal experience at a Fortune 500 company. Segal's approach is effective because it essentially employs an intuitive approach that builds "automatic" buy-in from key stakeholders while also providing powerful output and decision-making tools.

When I've spoken to ERM practitioners at other companies and hear of their problems, challenges, etc, I often think if they'd only taken this approach they'd be much farther along and in a better place.

I personally believe that a "reverse-engineered" view sometimes helps in the design of an ERM framework. For example, you look at risk metrics from the point of view of "end users" and what the key stakeholders want to know, what they ask, etc. Then you can build a methodology or process that allows you to attain these metrics as typical output of your risk quantification process. Segal's methodology is well suited for such an approach. This book provides a strong basis for risk quantification but also risk identification as well.

Depending on the stage and strengths of your ERM program you can pick and choose what aspects of the approach to adopt. If you are looking for everything from infrastructure to process to risk messaging and strategic decision-making I say you'll find it here.

The intuitive appeal of the risk ID and quantification processes is perhaps the biggest benefit and, as I said, it builds buy-in from the start and gets you on your way to a healthy risk culture which must underpin any effective ERM program.

Raucous, uninhibited and proud, Fela was one of Africa's most intriguing personalities, for his controversial public persona as much as for his music. It's difficult to say for what Fela, born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, was best known: his band publicized Afropop in the 1980s; he repeatedly spoke out against unfair politics in Africa and abroad; his life was abundant with drugs and sex. This exhaustive and objective profile, written by a Yale ethnomusicology professor, examines the Nigerian superstar's life and work from 1938 to his death in 1997. Veal traces Fela's roots to the diverse town of Abeokuta, noting the musical influences left by family and community members there. Following a typically mischievous childhood, Fela pursued an education at Trinity College of Music in London. Soon he and his orchestra were touring the U.S. under the name Nigeria 70, developing the new sound of Afropop. Although the tour was not a popular breakthrough, their subsequent return to Nigeria placed them on the budding African music stage. The book goes on to survey Fela's life at home and worldwide, detailing his imprisonment and physical abuse, his performances, his listeners' reactions and his compositions. Fela covered political corruption, mysticism, frustration with Western views on Africa and other significant subjects in his music, all the while continuing a sexually promiscuous life. Fela was born in Abeokuta, Nigeria, in 1938 into an upper-middle-class family whose members included several well-known educators and religious figures. In 1958, he was sent to London's Trinity College of Music, where he discovered Charlie Parker and John Coltrane and soon formed his own band, Koola Lobitos. Over the years, he developed a jazz-funk fusion style dubbed Afrobeat. Little known in America, Fela recorded dozens of albums and became an international superstar with a social and political conscience. His blistering attacks on Nigeria's corrupt military government landed him in jail, in exile, and in danger of losing his life. Veal (ethnomusicology, Yale) became interested in Fela nearly 20 years ago as a student at Boston's Berklee College of Music. Extensive notes, a comprehensive bibliography, and a discography reflect the book's scholarly credentials. interesting but doesn't read fluently

This book contains a lot of interesting information concerning Fela Kuti(family background, historical, cultural and political environment) but sometimes I had the distinct feeling I was reading a scientific research report. A little more fluency in writing would have made reading more enjoyable

Teacher Don't Teach Me Nonsense

A timely exploration of the father of Afro-beat. Veal, who we learn had occasion to play with Fela and spent time at the Shrine, is obviously a fan of the music and his enthusiasm is palpable. Veal's work is distinguished on many levels. As an ethnomusicologist, Veal offers rigorous descriptions and insights into the compositional aspects of Fela's work. We are given the specifics of Fela's innovations and refinements with Afro-beat. Veal locates Fela's accomplishments within the context of its forbears (E.T. Mensah, James Brown, John Coltrane, etc.)and 20th century African/Afrodiaporic music in general. From Nkrumah to Obasanjo, Veal's discussion of Nigerian/African culture and politics is well researched and thoughtful. There are great nuggets of biographical information from Fela's brief feud with Paul McCartney to November 14th, "Fela Day" in Berkeley (go figure). Veal offers a wealth of information on Fela's family and the impact his parents (his mother in particular) had on his musical and political development. We get the blow-by-blow account of Fela's confrontations with the Nigerian authorities (often, as with the Kalakuta Massacre, in harrowing detail). On the critical throretical tip, Veal 'samples' Gilroy, Jameson, Fanon, Spivak (and others), engaging in a extended discussion of Fela's compositions as postcolonial 'texts.' Though at times distractingly academic, Veal is rigorous in his deconstruction of Fela and gender, the "specific symbolic and psychological functions" of strategic historical essentialism, mysticism, etc., avoiding the cheap and oversimplistic assessments that often surround the man (often, as Veal notes, in service of hegemonic notions of "civilization"). There is much I loved about this book: the bits about Fela's "punk" approach, the rejoinder to jazzbo(zos) and their complaints about the lack of technical virtuosity in Fela's playing, the similarities between Fela's work and blaxploitation cinema, the Yoruban (tragic) basis of his music, his later compositions as underrated "African symphonies." Veal isn't afraid to write about Fela's misguided relationship with Professor Hindu, the emptiness of Fela's vaguely anarchic rhetoric as a concrete political agenda (Fela wasn't kidding about his aspirations), the problematics of Fela's lifestyle (too much pot, rampant and unprotected sex) and the effect of his lifestyle on his wives. I would have liked to have seen more on the parallels between Fela's development of Afro-beat and the stylistic exchanges with the J.B.s, and the Afrodiasporic interchanges that led to the development of hip-hop and modern dancehall. More on Dennis Bovell's involvement with Fela and more than passing reference to the Biafran conflict. The passage on Fela's continuing influence (and the intense rediscovery taking place as we speak by a new generation of musicians and music lovers) is all too brief. But these are minor quibbles. Veal has written a marvelous book on a man who was, by turns, confrontational, generous, autocratic, wild, and always brilliant. Essential reading on an essential figure. Long live Fela!

It's about time!

Fela is almost as important as Bob Marley in the world of black music, but no one has really written a serious book about him until now, and Michael Veal's book is an excellent one in my opinion. Sometimes it's a bit academic but it still provides a lot of detail on Fela's entire life, on the music of his entire career, and all of the Nigerian political backgound, which is substantial. I love Fela's music and I knew he was a legend, but I never quite realized how he put his life on the line to make the music he made and say the things he said, and how heavy it became between him and the Nigerian government. And I also never realized how crazy he was - not surprising considering the fact that he was a brilliant (insane?) artist, and also considering how heavy things became as time went on. That this man managed to survive as long as he did and turn out so much great music is nothing short of miraculous! I think the book is an invaluable document of the political and musical legacy of the 1960s as it developed in Africa during the 1970s and 1980s. I learned a lot about Africa, not only musically but culturally and politically too.

About the Author

Mini S. Thomas is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India (JMI), with 29 years of teaching and research experience in the field of power systems. She was the head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and currently is the director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. She graduated from the University of Kerala, India and obtained her M.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, both with Gold Medals. She also holds a Ph.D from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, New Delhi. Dr. Thomas conceived, designed, and implemented the first-of-their-kind supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and substation automation (SA) laboratories and has done extensive research work in SCADA systems, substation and distribution automation, and smart grids. She has published more than 100 research papers in international journals and conferences of repute, and is the coordinator of the special assistance program (SAP) on power system automation from the University Grants Commission, Government of India.

John D. McDonald, P.E., is director of Technical Strategy and Policy Development for GE Energy Management - Digital Energy, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, with 40 years of experience in the electric utility industry. He joined GE Energy’s Transmission and Distribution (now Digital Energy) business in 2008 as general manager of marketing, and accepted his current role in 2010. McDonald is a sought-after industry leader, technical expert, educator, and speaker. In his 28 years of working group and subcommittee leadership with the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Substations Committee, he led seven working groups and task forces that published standards and tutorials in the areas of SCADA and master/remote terminal unit (RTU) and RTU/IED communications protocols. He is a fellow of IEEE and past president of the IEEE PES. He teaches smart grid courses for GE and the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA, and substation automation, SCADA, and communications courses for various IEEE PES local chapters. He has published 80 papers and articles, co-authored four books, and holds a BSEE and MSEE from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA, and an MBA from the University of California-Berkeley, USA. He received the 2009 Outstanding Electrical and Computer Engineer Award from Purdue University.

I enjoy the classic hymns in this book such as "His eye is on the sparrow", "Turn your eyes upon Jesus", and "Wonderful grace of Jesus". I like that they are challenging, but not too difficult for me to play. Some of the songs have 3 sharps and often the song starts in first position and then goes into 3rd or 4th position. The play along cd is nice as well, playing each song twice, once with the violin and once with only accompaniment. They only thing I would say is that I don't think the hymns neccessarily sound all that much like fiddle songs.

This booklet has ten songs - has a Demo Track and a "Play-Along Track" CD. Blessed Assurance, Down at the Cross, and Wonderful Grace of Jesus has the notes going way up on the scale. I look forward to hearing these songs 'played-out'.
The violinist is Michael Giacobassi. I went on a "Google" search to see if I could hear him playing one of these pieces but was unsuccessful. This"Fiddle Hymns" is a gift so I will have to "wait" to hear him play these songs.
