From the Inside Flap
The first novel to articulate the rage and pain of life in "the other America," Last Exit to Brooklyn is a classic of postwar American writing. Selby's searing portrait of the powerless, the homeless, the dispossessed, is as fiercely and frighteningly apposite today as it was when it was first published more than thirty-five years ago.

About the Author
Hubert Selby Jr. was born in Brooklyn, New York. After leaving school he went to sea until illness forced him to leave the Merchant Marines. He began publishing stories in the 1950s, but it was the appearance of LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN in the mid-sixties that brought him widespread recognition. Bennies, bums and beatings
By Keith A. Comess
"Last Exit" is now around 60 years old. It's a inter-related group of short stories dealing with the "underclass" of 1950s Brooklyn, New York. It clearly stands the test of time and, to use a hackneyed term, it's a "classic" in the tradition of Burroughs, Bukowski, Ginsberg and other more famous authors of the era.

"Exit" divides into three inter-related parts. Part 1 deals with a group of neighborhood toughs, all unemployed, bored and both by habit and temperment, looking for trouble. They hang out at a local dive, a diner called, "the Greeks" (no punctuation, per the author). They avail themselves of the first opportunity for violence and seriously beat a soldier who, in their perception, slighted a local "floozy". After administering a serious beating and in true sociopathic fashion, Vinnie and friends cavalierly return to the diner and their coffee. During the course of the evening and later on, they consume prodigious quantities of gin, benzedrine (legal at the time) and weed. They berate gays but happily and unabashedly party with transvestites. In Part 2, "Strike" focus shifts to a local machine shop and the union shop steward, Harry, who has some problems of his own. He's a lazy, belligerent and foul-mouthed bum whose "work ethic" leaves something to be desired from the perspective of the union (where his fealty outweighs his shortcomings), from the machinists themselves (where his grating and affected "hail fellow, well met" approach and incessant bragging further compromise his strong-arm techniques) to the company executives who provoke a strike in an effort to rid themselves of an offensive parasite. As the strike progresses, the thugs from Part 1 leach food and alcohol from the shop steward, introduce him to the demi-monde of gay sex and eventually beat him to a bloody pulp after he attempts to seduce a neighborhood boy. Part 3 ("Landsend") is a series of vignettes featuring residents of "the Project". This section is the strongest of the three, as it perfectly captures the mood, language, mores and attitudes of a cross-section of lower-class America, both then and now. It is reminiscent in it's fealty to language and atmosphere of Roth's, "Call it Sleep", an acknowledged masterpiece set in turn-of-the (20th)-century Jewish tenement culture. Marlon Brando in the film, "On the Waterfront" also comes to mind.

It's likely that Hubert Selby, Jr.'s perspectives were well informed by his own lifestyle which blended heroin, alcohol and a singularly avant guarde/bohemian lifestyle, especially for the time. His novels were all successful ("Exit" was filmed). Due to the startlingly explicit depictions of both homosexual and heterosexual sex, parts of which were (and remain) disquieting (e.g., the gang rape concluding Part 1), "Exit" was banned as "obscene". By current standards, it remains graphic and probably (given emerging Victorian sensibilities wrapped in sharp, cool clothes and covered with currently fashionable jargon) would warrant a "trigger warning" at certain American colleges and universities. One wonders if Selby could land a university job in the present era (he served as USC writing faculty).

"Exit" is a strong, compelling, unaffected, authentic and vibrant piece of literature. It's clear depictions of 1950s Brooklyn, coupled with the frenetic writing style (idiosyncratic punctuation, reproduced in this edition, reflecting Selby's rush to convey his typewritten thoughts to paper as rapidly as possible). It's more honest than Kerouac, less contrived than Burroughs and as insightful as Bowles. What more can you ask?

Gritty view of mid-century Brooklyn
By Amazon Customer
A difficult but somehow hopeful book. The gritty nature of NYC working class (or lower) people in the forties/fifties is uncomfortable at times. But the acceptance of drag queens and others on the fringe is wonderful. Stylistically, sometimes the book felt like a novel, sometimes like a Beatnik rap, and sometimes like poetry. Not a book to read fast, but a book that keeps you thinking.

One of a kind read
By J. Vaughn
This is the second book of Selby's I've enjoyed, Requiem of a Dream was the first. I will continue to order his works, as I consider him one of the best American writers, The Room more than likely will be next. He is a very talented writer who prefers writing about characters with major character flaws, yet instead of condesending them, he allows us to see what drives them to do the things that ultimately destroy their lives, thus allowing the reader to see the tragedy and feel empathy towards them. He writes in a musical fashion, something of a cross between poetry and a typist's prose with minimal punctuation to get in the way (although that takes some getting used to).

Last Exit concerns itself with the downward spiraling lives of various "lowlifes" in NYC during the 50's. There's a transvestite drug abuser named Georgette who is in love with Vinnie, a street thug who only uses him for drugs and money. Tralala is a vain street hustler and hooker who blows her chance at a decent life, and wastes away in bars searching for the next john that will make her feel like she is as beautiful as she imagines herself again, and Harry is an unhappily married and disturbed union strike leader. During the story he discovers he is a homosexual and finds happiness in various relationships with the drag queens of a local bar. However, after the strike is over and he is broke, he is shunned by the group and destroys himself by doing a terrible thing trying to regain his lost fulfillment. Also there are quite a few short stories at the end, following various characters through their daily routines, personally my favorite part of the novel.

The stories intertwine at times, and are very graphic in language, sex, and violence, not allowing the reader to look away even in the darkest sections of the novel. It was released in 1964, and was banned in Britian for a couple of years, labeled by the government as "obscene". However, if you can look past the subject matter and read this book, I can pretty much guarantee you will grow as a person. And anyone who enjoys classic American literature and/or a good story, albeit not always with a happy ending, will find much to love here.

At Luke Skywalker’s request, Talon Karrde mounts an expedition to rescue the young students. Anakin Solo has his own ideas. Impatient, and figuring that forgiveness is easier to come by than permission, he takes off for Yavin 4 in his X-wing.

When it comes to confidence, courage, and raw Force talent, Anakin has few peers. But when his friend Tahiri is separated from the other academy kids and captured by the Yuuzhan Vong, even Anakin may be in over his head. For the aliens have a different future in mind for Tahiri, and they will stop at nothing to achieve their horrific ends . . .

Talon Karrde clasped his hands beneath his goatee and studied the scene on the Wild Karrde's command deck viewscreen through pale blue eyes.

"Well, Shada," he told the striking woman at his right hand, "it appears that our baby-sitting chore has become somewhat more . . . interesting than anticipated."

"I would say so," Shada D'ukal replied. "The sensor shroud shows at least seven ships in orbit around Yavin 4 and another six on the surface."

"None of them are Yuuzhan Vong, I take it."

"No. A mixed bag, but I'd lay odds that they are Peace Brigade."

"Gambling is a foolish occupation," Karrde said. "I want to know. And I want to know what they're doing." He ticked his finger against the armrest. "I knew we should have found some way to leave sooner. Skywalker was right." He sighed and leaned forward, studying the long-range sensors.

"There's some sort of firefight on the surface, yes,
H'sishi?"

"Looks like it," the Togorian mewled.

"Solusar?" Karrde wondered. "Maybe. How long before we can be there?"

"They outnumber us badly," Shada pointed out. "We should call the rest of our ships before we do anything."

"We should certainly call them, but we can't wait for them. Someone down there is fighting for his life, most likely one of the people I told Skywalker I would protect. What's more, the fact that there are still ships on the surface suggests they haven't finished what they came here to do. That is, they don't have the Jedi children yet. If we wait until they have them aboard, in space, the job of rescuing them will become much more complicated."

"I see that," Shada said. "But it will be more complicated yet if they blow us out of the sky."

Karrde laughed. "Shada, when will you learn to trust my instincts? When have I ever gotten you killed?"

"YOu have a point there, I suppose."

Karrde pointed at Yavin 4, at the moment a dark disk silhouetted against the larger orange profile of its primary. "So I want to be there, now. Dankin, keep full cloak, but let me know when they notice us."

"Of course, sir."
That point came an hour later, when they were almost sitting on the nearest of the orbiting ships.

"They're hailing us, sir," Dankin told him. "And powering up weapons."

"Put them on."

A moment later, a thick-featured human male with thin, graying hair appeared on the communication holoscreen.

"Freighter, identify yourself." He chopped the words out in even syllables.

"My name, sir, is Talon Karrde. Perhaps you've heard of me."

The man's eyes pinched warily. "Yes, I've heard of you, Captain Karrde. It's rude to sneak up on someone like that. And dangerous."

"And it's rude to be given a name and not offer one," Karrde returned.

A look of annoyance crossed the fellow's face. "Don't try me, Captain Karrde. You may call me Captain Imsatad. What do you want?"

Karrde favored the man with a wan smile. "I was going to ask you the same question."

"I don't follow you," Imsatad said.

"You seem to be having some sort of trouble. I'm offering my assistance."

"We need no assistance, I assure you. And to be blunt, Captain Karrde, I don't believe you. I remember you as a smuggler, a pirate, and a traitor to the Empire."

"Then perhaps you remember, as well, what became of those who treated me with disrespect," Karrde said icily. "But if we are being blunt--and perhaps that is best here, since you seem to lack the education for more civilized discourse--I am undoubtedly here for the same reason you are--to collect the bounty on the young Jedi below."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Karrde leaned toward the screen, eyes glittering dangerously. "You are a liar, Captain, and a poor one. I see no reason for us to play games."

"I trust you've noticed you're outnumbered."

"I trust you noted I was able to drop in on you in, shall we say, an unannounced fashion. Do you really think I brought only one ship?"

Imsatad glared at him, then cut his visual. Karrde waited patiently until, a few moments later, the image
returned.
"This is none of your business," the man said.

"Profit is always my business."

"There is no profit here, and if there were, you would already be too late."

"Oh, I don't think so. Why are your ships still on the surface? Why do my sensors show what seems to be protracted search activity? You've let your quarry slip through your fingers, Captain." Karrde smiled and leaned back in his chair. "Consider my offer of help. I ask little in return, and I could be a nuisance if you spurn my kindness."

"That sounds like a threat."

Karrde spread his hands. "Take it however you please. Shall we discuss this further or not?"

"You say you ask for little. What, exactly, would
that be?"

"A few kind words in the ears of the Yuuzhan Vong. An introduction. You see, Captain, for some years now I've been retired from my chosen profession. But these are very interesting times, exactly the sort of times my kind thrives on, if you know what I mean. I'd like to come out of retirement."

"Go on."

Karrde stroked his mustache thoughtfully. "The Yuuzhan Vong have promised a truce if the Jedi are delivered to them. I would like to bargain for passage through Yuuzhan Vong space, once the borders are established."

"Why should they allow a smuggler to use their space?"

"There may be things they need. I can get them. If not, I would be doing them no harm; all of my activities would be aimed at the scattered remnants of the New Republic. But those remnants are separated, at times, by Yuuzhan Vong-occupied systems. The cost of circumventing them, frankly, would be prohibitive."

Imsatad nodded, and a brief look of disgust wrinkled his features. "I see. You realize I can promise none of that."

"I only asked for a mention of my help in this affair. You can promise that."

"I could," Imsatad acknowledged. "What exactly can you offer me?"

"Better sensors than you have, for one thing. Detailed knowledge of Yavin 4 that I believe you lack. A crew that is very, very good at finding things. Certain special defenses against Jedi--and the means of finding them."

Imsatad stiffened, and his voice dropped low. "I was with Thrawn at Wayland. You still? . . ."

"Ah. You know what I mean, then."

"I know you betrayed him."

Karrde rolled his eyes. "How tiresome. Very well, Captain, if you don't wish my services, there are others who will."

"Wait!" Imsatad chewed his lip for a moment. "I need to consult with my officers on this."

"Take a few moments," Karrde said, lifting a finger. "But do not bore me." He cut the transmission.

then it is a good step in the saga
By Amazon Customer
If you are into the series, "the new jedi order", then it is a good step in the saga. I made my mistake by reading "legend" and "fate" of the jedi first. With references to the Vong war, I had to backtrack in the story line to understand better. Greg keeps the quality up. A good read.

Pretty good insight view of the Yuuzhan Vong
By V. M. Vaglio
In this book the Vong have come up with an efficient way of capturing the Jedi, a way that also helps introducing more dissent among the already divided New Republic, and that's when Anakin Solo appears and tries to rescue the Jedi Students from this new cruel and evil opponent.
The best feature of this novel is that it introduces and develops a vivid description of the Yuuzhan Vong society, their beliefs, motivation and even technology. Most authors in past New Jedi Order books just give you a brief glimpse of this new enemy, not a deep description. Keyes tells the quest of young Anakin and in the way makes a great development of this enemy, going beyond the rage and technology we have seen in previous books of this series and going deep in their belief system, social structure and motivation, and finaly gives us a hint of something we have never ever seen: there could really be some dissention among the Vong.
The reason I did not rated this novel with five stars was because you get the feel that the timeline extends for quite a while (the events in the book develop in more less a month, and believe me, it's A LOT), and also because there are a lot of situations and characters borrowed from the Young Jedi Knight Series (a series that, by the way, is the lousiest writting ever done around the SW Universe, even for kids), as well as a poor depiction of characters we have come to love like Mara and Talon Karrde (well, this guy definitely isn't Zahn). There are no appearances by Han or Leia, but it really doesn't matter, since the story does pretty well without them.
But besides this flaws, the book is entertaining, and even if the plot is slow at some times, you will be more than satisfied with the depiction of Vong society.

It's a new world out there
By J. Helene Wherry
I have been reading the New Jedi Order books with trepidation. Every time I read one I find I am so drawn into the books that I feel the same horror as the characters as they see the destruction the Yuuzhan Vong evoke as they take over the Star Wars Galaxy. This book was no exception. I bought it when it first came out and couldn't bring myself to read it until recently. I kept looking at the book and saying "I can't read that - I don't want to know what happens next..." It was very hard to approach this book since I had read the Jr. Jedi Knights series and remembered the characters Tahiri, Tionne and others. Needless to say, this was the first book that gave me hope as well as more insight into the Yuuzhan Vong and the characters of Anakin Solo and Tahiri. If you are looking for the "tried and true" characters, Luke, Mara Jade, Han and Leia - this is not the place to find them. It's a new galaxy ...

Advanced Linear Algebra (Textbooks in Mathematics), by Hugo Woerdeman

Advanced Linear Algebra features a student-friendly approach to the theory of linear algebra. The author’s emphasis on vector spaces over general fields, with corresponding current applications, sets the book apart. He focuses on finite fields and complex numbers, and discusses matrix algebra over these fields. The text then proceeds to cover vector spaces in depth. Also discussed are standard topics in linear algebra including linear transformations, Jordan canonical form, inner product spaces, spectral theory, and, as supplementary topics, dual spaces, quotient spaces, and tensor products.

Written in clear and concise language, the text sticks to the development of linear algebra without excessively addressing applications. A unique chapter on "How to Use Linear Algebra" is offered after the theory is presented. In addition, students are given pointers on how to start a research project. The proofs are clear and complete and the exercises are well designed. In addition, full solutions are included for almost all exercises.
