One of the Strangest Alien Abduction Stories

This is one of the strangest alien abduction stories I've ever read, and probably the most chilling. The Mojave Desert is home to the U.S. Military, and rumored vast underground bases and caverns that hold alien beings. Even ancient Indian geoglyphs indicate these beings have been here for thousands of years. Felber makes you experience the terror the Gifford's experienced in the desert by these creatures--it's a real page turner!

Mojave Incident - Challenge what you think you know

As a person of science and also a person of open thought, this book stays with you long after the pages have ended. The author does an excellent job of capturing the normality of the characters which sets the background for the believability of the story. The conclusion drawn by the "officials" is exactly as it should be (I wont ruin it for you). If you like to challenge common thoughts and question the actual humanity and history of man, this is a great read. Perhaps what is most thought provoking is that it is based on a real event, experienced by real people, who were not inclined to tell their story for profit or fame. Reading and understanding the emotions associated with the event and not just tangible details is a new experience in a UFO read for me. Well written and memorable - enjoy.

Fantastic Book!!!

The MOJAVE INCIDENT is a very thought provoking book. The author was really able to put you in the shoes of Elise and Tom and effectively conveyed the horror that they experienced in the desert. It really makes you think about the possibility of other "beings", and the possibility of other universes. A must read book that challenges our paradigms of the universe.

Perfect Intermingling

Unhappily Ever After, where the plot's made up and the rules don't matter...ahaha. Three Kings. Three Queens. Ill pairings and unsettled unhappiness all around...Until Queen Cinderella decides to hatch a plot.

The Good: The satire and wit were in the spotlight, Clarke writing wonderfully between a casual narrative and an upright, proper story. I cringed a few times, expecting a bit of overwhelming crass from a few characters (who shall be left unnamed; I think you'll know them when you see them), and yet, I was relieved that the raunch stayed at bare minimum. And was still sort of funny.

The Bad: I can't really say. I don't remember anything 'bad' about it.

The Overall: If you want gritty, over-the-top action, a story that rushes you through the exposition, and one that takes itself far too seriously, you will be disappointed. Clarke understands the narrative of this story very well, and thus, the pacing and narrative takes itself about as seriously as the original Batman. However, Clarke does great at keeping all the terms and concepts inside of a Fairytale Land, even down to explaining why there's a TV in every palace. This book was great, and is worth the read.

I'm a big fan of Lucinda E Clarke. I have read several of her books and this is the main reason I was attracted to this book. Normally I am not a fan of comedy in books so that is probably my starting point. Humour is a very personal thing and I suspect my sense of humour has been warped with age. My sense is that this book will have a great deal of appeal to most but unfortunately I only got the edge of it which to be fair I believe would be a truly personal thing. I could be thrown off by the style I'm used to from Lucinda but whatever the reason it shouldn't take away too much from the book as it stands. It is funny, there is an intelligence here in often simple humour that shines through in the style and quality of the writing and if you enjoy humour in books generally, then I feel you will enjoy this particular book. The humour and style is quite British which as a neighbouring Irishman means I am quite familiar with it and if this is you cup of tea so to speak, then certainly Unhappily ever after will be a joy to you. Love Lucinda's work, pick this up and go find her more serious work too, she is a joy to behold.

A Fun Read

This is the kind of book to read if one is feeling down and blue, because it will pick up your spirits. It speculates what a hundred year marriage would be like between Cinderella and Prince Charming. Cinderella becomes an overweight glutton and wants a divorce. Intertwine other royals like Snow White, Prince Harold, Beauty and Prince Augustus,a slew of royal brats, and the story is an enjoyable and light read, full of wry humor and equally idiotic peasant characters. In the end, divorce is finally allowed in fantasyland and everyone lives happily ever after. Well written and descriptive.

Professor of Marketing at San Diego State University. He received his B.S. degree in Marketing from Penn State University, his M.B.A. from Drexel University, and his Ph.D. in Consumer Behavior from the University of Pittsburgh. He has published articles on advertising and marketing in a variety of journals and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Advertising. A Textbook that's Interesting

I got the Kindle "rented" version for 3 months - it's ridiculously priced to buy or to rent - obscene and they should be ashamed. That said - the book, while slow going, is absolutely fascinating. I would take this class again just to read the rest of the book that I missed!
It's updated fairly regularly every couple years it seems - I recommend it. Oh, and say goodbye to your money $ka-ching!$$

Please be advised that this version of the text does NOT have the same content as the US edition. The questions, while generally the same, differ slightly, as do the chapter introductions (which some questions are based off of). If you are looking for a cheap alternative to the US book and will be using it to answer questions in class, AVOID THIS VERSION.

Probably the best book Wodehouse ever wrote

The first thing that has to be mentioned about Summer Moonshine is the hero - Joe Vanringham. I think he is the best hero that Wodehouse ever created - tough; street-smart; not at all the usual 'silly ass' and yet not overly romantic or anything like that. (In fact, if you read Bachelors Anonymous you'll realise that Wodehouse's Joes generally tend to be very good!) The plot is extremely complicated as Wodehousian plots tend to be, but even more so than usual. One finds oneself flipping back to check up on what happened where. And then, on finally figuring it out, laughing like a lunatic. It's a charming book, as economical with space and as funny as one has come to expect Wodehouse to be. Sir Buckstone Abbot is one of the best characters Wodehouse has ever come up with - ditto to Sam Bulpitt, and one wonders why they couldn't become recurring characters. But Joe is the best ever! All hail Joe Vanringham! (Forgive my babbling; this is my favorite book ever, as it's not that difficult to figure out.)

A Different Wodehouse Book

Someday I'd like to read a real biography of Wodehouse (as opposed to the dreadful "fan" bios out there) and find out what was happening to him around 1936 -- when he wrote the scathing, angry "Laughing Gas" and this one. "Summer Moonshine" uses Wodehouse plot A: boy-chases-girl-at-country-house. Yet strange feelings of hopelessness and despair creep into it, and when boy loses girl there's a bitterness like in no other Wodehouse novel. It's not bad, but you definitely get the sense that, as the author himself might put it, something's up.

Wodehouse with a Bite

There are passages in this 1937 classic that make you flip to the cover to make sure it's PG Wodehouse you are reading. A bitter bite occasionally stings you like a famished mosquito attacking from nowhere. Protagonist Joe Vanringham embarks on a 20 page conversation with Jane, the woman he decides to marry seven or eight seconds after their first meeting, and what a witty, hilarious conversation it is. Until, reviewing Joe's biography, Jane asks, "why did you leave home?" When she presses, Joe says, "suppose we talk about something else," and something dark eclipses the dialogue. Wodehouse knows what's going on; he has Jane musing about Joe changing "the game," starting as a "cheerful idiot" (a bitter characterization in itself) and shifting to a cold, "Madam, you strangely forget yourself." Unwodehousian, to be sure. It's only the begining. Joe's lengthy excoriation of his step-mother, Princess Dwornitzchek, whom he blithely accuses of killing his father while "making a fool of herself with boys half her age," is perhaps Woodhouse's most scathing passage in all his fiction.

This intrusion of bitterness and the kind of hatred only family members can work up is in sharp contrast to the antic buffoonery afoot everywhere else in the book. Wodehouse seems determined to stay at the extremes: utter farce sprinkled with seething rage.

The result is Wodehouse in top satirical form, a plot to amaze, characters to remember, with a final resolution a bit too ordinary for the tour de force that went before.

Don't mistake me. The comic elements work beautifully; this is a funny novel. The characters are limned with deftness and just enough subtlety to drive the story and the humor. The best of these is Joe, a flawed hero who somehow maintains his unconquerability in the face of personal rejection, career destruction and financial ruin.

Jane is dynamite; very much up to the job of being a match for Joe, though her devotion to foppish golddigger Adrian Peake is no more comprehensible to us than to Joe.

The supporting cast is surprisingly strong. Sir Buck, the broke baronet trying to unload the ugliest castle in the kingdom so as to regain solvency, is chucklingly imbalanced; his former dancehall girl wife, Lady Abbot, is as sweet, loving, and imperturbable as the vile Princess is mercurial and vicious. Joe's brother Tubby plays Curly to Joe's Moe and does it well.

Miss Whittaker, assistant to Sir Buck, is a terrific player, sharp, temperamental, guileless, and oh, so strong, "quate" the person to stand in the eye of all the storms that swirl about this swirling plot. She steals every scene she graces and gives the evil Princess her ultimate comeuppance.

Of course, there is nemesis turned savior, American plasterer (don't ask), Sam Bullpit. He is a bit too creepy to be hilarious, but he does what he came for. And, if Wodehouse had to strike one truly sour note with a bit of racist mumbling, 'twere best that the words were placed in this man's mouth.

All in all, this is a book that belongs near the top of "The Best of PG etc., etc."

Everything you never knew or thought about water

I came to The Big Thirst as someone who was already pretty water conscious (some think obsessed), and a definite water conservationist. But, wow, all that I had never thought about water Charles Fishman has contained in this book in a thought provoking, entertaining and instructive way. This is in no diatribe designed to make us feel guilty about our water ignorance (although Fishman does rant on Arlen Specter at one point near the end, and rightfully so), but rather a series of stories crafted to heighten our awareness, in an attempt as the author says "to change our relationship to water".

From Australia to India, down the strip of Las Vegas, around the Gulf Coast of Texas to Vermont and elsewhere Fishman takes the reader on a tour of man's challenges and successes in managing our water usage, distribution systems as well as the effect on mankind, the economy and lastly gets the reader thinking about where the next million or billion gallons is coming from.

This book is a treat for anyone who has stopped for even one minute to wonder where our water really flows from and if someday it might not.

Everything You Need to Know About Water and Why It's So Important

Water, as everyone knows, is the basis of life as we know it. We simply cannot survive without it. That makes water a very valuable resource and one that people have argued and fought over for too many years to recall.

In this book, the author takes us on a journey about the history of water, why it is where it is, why cities have sprung up where they have, how water has been turned into a multibillion dollar business and what is happening in the water world currently. It is almost all encompassing on the subject of water and is fascinating in the process.

One of the first points made by the author is that the water we drink today is the same water that has been on the planet for ions. That water was formed during a period in the earth's creation and the amount has not changed since then. As a result, the water we drink today was, at one time, the toilet water of ancient civilizations and was where dinosaurs drank, bathed and went to the bathroom. While this may be a disturbing thought, it has been that way for ions and provides us with a method for reusing today's water to become tomorrow's water.

Along the journey, the author points out that due to climate change, water that was easily obtainable in the past maybe be moving to newer locations. Cities that were thought to have safe supplies are in the process of going dry. Las Vegas, as one example, is reusing and capturing every possible drop of water since the supply at Lake Mead is dwindling by the day. Another example used by the author is the drought that has overtaken the City of Atlanta and how precarious the supply to that city is. He also discusses why this doesn't have to be.

This is only a small part of the discussion of water the author brings to the table. He goes around the world to explore water issues in other countries and why they have occurred and what can be done to fix the problems.

I highly recommend this book to all. As the water we take for granted becomes harder to supply, we will need to develop new strategies for handling water supply to citizens and corporations. This book is the beginning step in a new way to think about

Practice makes perfect

I've heard the phrase practice makes perfect all my life. It's what my parents always told me when they forced me to practice piano between lessons. It only makes sense that it translates over into test taking as well. The problem is, I don't take tests on a daily basis. While I'm certainly grateful for that fact, when I DO have to take tests, they seem daunting and very hard overall. When this important test popped up on my radar, I knew I had to be ready. And if practice makes perfect, then I wanted to practice. At first, I wasn't sure how I was going to do that, but then I found these practice questions so I grabbed them and got to work. The practice tests included in this guide really helped me not only see what types of things I would see on the test, but also to understand some of the material better. I was able to quiz myself and see which areas needed more work and what I already knew. Once I practiced enough and got good at many of the tests, I almost started enjoying taking them. I knew once I went into the real test that while I may not be perfect, I was certainly better off then I would have been had I not had so much practice.

I returned this purchase. I was looking for a study guide for the current test which as I understand is based on the DSM 5. The book refers to the DSM 4 TR. only. I think that this book ( as well as others on Amazon) are out of date.

These developments are the reason I wrote a Fifth Edition of USB Complete. I've updated the contents from beginning to end. As always, my focus was on providing a single, comprehensive source to guide developers who need to design, program, and communicate with USB devices of all types. I hope you find the book useful.

Great / wide ranging coverage of USB at a number of levels. Like all of Jan's stuff, easy to read and utilize. If you are after a dive into hardware level signaling, it's there and you can use that section by it's self. If you want to start from bits and pieces and finish up with a full blown custom driver, you can do that as well.

If you have the need to do a customized USB hardware device, you need this book. You likely also need a bunch of other stuff as well. The same is true if you are going to write a device driver. You need this book. You also need to understand a lot about writing code. If you are doing a commercial product. There is a *lot* more you will need to do to go from scratch ASIC's to "plug and play on every device on the planet" than any one book can cover.

My only gripe (and it's a very minor one) is that the Amazon description does not really cover the book as well as it might. The book does cover the in's and outs of getting Windows to co-operate with USB. It is not a book on "using C# and Visual Basic". The book is by no means specifically targeted on those two languages. (ok so pretty picky ...).

Is 100% of everything you would ever need to know in this one book? Of course not. You can have a few hundred books on this and related subjects and not cover *everything*. The book goes about as deep as you possibly can without becoming un-usable. It's also here at a pretty reasonable price rather than costing $250 ... (Buy many limited run academic text's lately? They are expensive).

I purchased this book on Kindle in order to get a foundational understanding of how USB works, and hopefully a few coding examples. I got exactly what I needed! The book is well organized, complete in its description of the subject matter, and even gave a primer on .NET vs API calls. If you need a quick and complete tutorial, as well as a brief reference guide....this is probably the best book you're going to find. My only unfulfilled wish was that when reading this Kindle book on an iPad, some of the screen capture photos were difficult to read. This may be different if viewed on a Kindle, or on a desktop running Kindle software. I typically purchase my books on Kindle, this one made me wish I'd been patient enough to wait for a hard copy.

Was "average-ly" good.

A lot of the content in this book especially towards the end are redundant to the content that is introduced in the beginning. The concepts are repeated, and it seems as if the author has a strong bias towards baseball as the sport of example, followed by football and soccer, when there are many other sports out there. Most of the views on "parents of athletes" are one-sided from the coach's perspective, without taking into consideration as to why athlete's parents behave the way they do at practices or games given their different backgrounds. Overall, this book was a good read for simple young athlete coaching concepts.
