Very Useful Guide

A book like this can't really be perfect for me because if it were it would teach me everything about my iPhone 6! I gave this book my best rating because it is well written, well presented, very detailed, loaded with how-to articles, abd well organized. In short, this user manual is just about as good as a UM can be (for me)!

This "manual " turns out to be a superficial review of the iPhone 6. Lacks any real information beyond a cursory review. While it has a Table of Contents it lacks an index. You will be much better off printing off the online manual on the Apple site. I rate this most certainly a "Don't Buy".

Has useful information

This is a good book. It explains what happens when a certain pathway is malfunctioning. However, I wish that it was a little more clear in explaining certain pathways. (It assumes you really know biochemistry).

Great book for biochem not so much for the boards

For those who like pictures along with their text, this book is great. Even though biochemistry is a detailed subject this book is not too weighed down in details and will allow you to understand the material fairly well. However, I stared to turn to it more as a reference than a main source. This may be because I thought that it was not calibrated appropriately for the usmle. It seems to be written more for a biochemistry class. It lacks in clinical correlations, the ability to be quickly reviewed, and there are precious few questions to get down the material at the end of each chapter. One feature that was nice, however, was a summary section at the end of each chapter. It is definitely not a comprehensive summary, but it does allow a quick summary of good things to know. All in all, a good book to have with you, but not the best source for the boards.

A fantastic book: Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews - Biochemistry

I found this book to be fantastically illustrated and just the right amount of thoroughness for a review book. I seldom used it during the Biochemistry class as it didn't go into the level of detail expected for school exams. However it was quite useful for a quick resource if I was struggling with a concept. The book was a fantastic tool in the couple of days I had to prepare for the NBME after the end of the class. I read it from cover to cover in 2 days, stopping along the way to check my notes on a few concepts that were superficially covered. I was more than pleased with my score after using this as my main source to prepare (aside from studying hard during the course, obviously).

The illustrations & flow charts are the best part of the book, they are simple and easy to read. Key words are often bolded to make skimming easy. Another thing I enjoyed with this text was that most pages have very large empty margins so there is plenty of room for writing your own notes next to diagrams/paragraphs.

Adult/High School—As a young graduate student fresh off an extended stint following the Grateful Dead, Venkatesh began studying urban poverty. With a combination of an ethnographer's curiosity about another culture and some massive naïveté, he gathered firsthand knowledge of the intricacies of Chicago's Robert Taylor projects. Early on, he met a megalomaniac gang leader known here as J.T., who became his mentor. Venkatesh observed and learned how the crack game works, and how many have their fingers in the pie and need life to remain the way it is. He observed violence, corruption, near homelessness, good cops, bad cops, and a lot of neglect and politics-as-usual. He made errors in judgment—it took a long time for his street smarts to catch up to his book smarts—but he tells the story in such a way as to allow readers to figure out his missteps as he did. Finally, as the projects began to come down, Venkatesh was able to demonstrate how something that seems positive is not actually good for everyone. As a Chicago Native, This Book Intrigued Me

In short, this book is about a student who decided to study poverty in Chicago by actually living in the "ghetto." As a person who has lived in Chicago my whole life, this book was intriguing from the start. I still remember when the Robert Taylor homes were torn down and some of the tenants were dispersed near my hometown of Skokie, so to learn about their previous life was fascinating and humbling. I drive for Uber in Chicago and when I talk with people, particularly University of Chicago (where the author did his research) students, I usually recommend this book.

I was required to read this book for class but ended up really enjoying it. It reads as a fictional book however it is very true, as well as eye opening. Not only was this interesting to read but it was also an easy ready. It is about a sociologist who goes to experience the slums and gang life first hand to learn about it. It is so bizarre to read about his exeperience from the inside.

It was a wonderful insight into the reality of living in Chicago from the late 80's to mid 90's. Is the dialogue a little unrealistic? Sure, but in all honesty, I would have grown tired of reading slang, so I'm very grateful that he avoided that route. I am thoroughly looking forward to reading the floating city.
I'm not a terribly slow reader and I'm not the quickest either, but the chapters are long, so be ready for a marathon of reading. It is well worth it though. I feel like I learned a lot about my fellow man and about a class that works hard to remain a family.

best hard-boiled collection

Dashiell Hammett's _The Big Knockover_ is a wonderful collection of stories by the master of the crime novel himself. The introduction by Lillian Hellman gives the reader excellent insight into her relationship with Hammett, as well as a glimpse of the author. For Hammett fans, the book is nearly worth the price for Hellman's introduction alone.
This collection is better than his Maltese Falcon, all the Sam Spade, and the Thin Man stories. Among Hammett's writings, the only novel to equal this collection, in my mind, is _Red Harvest_.
Stories in this book range from short to near-novella length. Topics range from the very typical Hammett plot (young woman is missing, wealthy dad pays for her return)of "The Gatewood Caper" to the offbeat noir-Western "Corkscrew" to the looting of an entire island ("The Looting of Couffignal").
The one "straight" story in the bunch, not a crime story at all, is "Tulip," published as a fragment. As it is, it doesn't pull much weight. To call the plot meandering would be generous.
The title story is a classic. A big bank-robbery caper starts looking bizarre when, days later, roomsful of America's highest profile crooks start turning up dead.
One bad story doesn't ruin the whole bunch. If you're a fan of Hammett's other books, give _The Big Knockover_ a chance.

"The Big Knockover" is a collection of 10 short stories, 9 of which originally appeared in "Black Mask" or "Mystery Stories" magazines, 1923-1929, and feature Dashiell Hammett's famous hard-nosed, always unnamed Continental Op detective. Several of these stories find the Continental Op out of his usual element in far-flung or exotic locales. "The King Business" takes place in a fictional Balkan nation of Muravia, of all places, and involves a political coup. "Corkscrew" is so named after an Arizona desert town, complete with cowboys, where the Op has been sent to break up an illegal immigration operation. The Op's adventures with the customary mode of transportation -horses- provides some comic relief. "Dead Yellow Women" takes place in San Francisco's Chinatown, where the mysteries of this immigrant culture prove confusing for the very American detective. I was surprised to see a Hammett detective in these unusual environments, but was entertained to find that there are thugs and grifters everywhere in Hammett's stories. The Op is never really out of sorts. He may not speak the language, but he's always at home in the criminal underworld. "The Gutting of Couffignal", "Fly Paper", "The Scorched Face", and "The Gatewood Caper" are more conventional Hammett, revolving around the debauchery of lowlifes and the dirty laundry of the wealthy. "The Big Knockover", after which the book is named, and "$106,000 Blood Money" are a two-parter about a spectacular caper in which an army of 150 crooks hold up an entire San Francisco city block and its aftermath. "Tulip" is the odd story out. It is the beginning of an unfinished novel that Hammett started late in life. It is unlike any work that Hammett published. The story concerns two older men, both educated and literate, both with criminal pasts. One is a writer who is working on a book. The other consciously rejected the literate lifestyle many years before, but is always anxious to tell his own story. It isn't very good. The style is tortuous and difficult to follow, the opposite of Hammett's typical lean, direct prose. "Tulip" appears to be an almost ridiculously overt allegory of the author's inner struggles with the value of words versus actions and the meaning of telling stories.
"The Big Knockover" was edited by Dashiell Hammett's longtime companion, the playwright Lillian Hellman, who wrote the introduction to the book in 1965, 5 years after Hammett died. She affectionately describes how they met, their relationship, how he died, and provides some insight into Hammett's personality from someone who knew him well. It's worth reading. "The Big Knockover" is a solid collection of Hammett stories featuring the wry, indomitable Continental Op. Dashiell Hammett was one of the 20th century's best short story writers, and, apart from "Tulip", which is a curiosity, this is classic Hammett and well worth reading whether you are new to Hammett or already a fan.

Hammett's Best Stories Collected in a Posthumous Selection

Irresistible stories, expertly selected & introduced by Lillian Hellman. More compelling even than the other Hammett short stories collection, "The Continental Op" - which features a more conventional foreword & introductory remarks. Stories here are of a great variety, also of a wide timespan; and one of the best, I think, is the one "straight" story in the volume, 'Tulip': this is less hard-boiled than fascinating (if left in a fragmented form). All in all, one of the 20th century classics - not just in terms of classic mysteries, but of world literature; it can certainly compete with Hammett's finest novels such as "The Glass Key" or the similarly offbeat (since humorous) "The Thin Man".

Joan Salge Blake, MS, RD, LDN, Boston University

Joan Salge Blake is the author of Nutrition & You, our successful book for the non-majors nutrition course, in addition to this text. Joan is a clinical associate professor and dietetics internship director at Boston University’s Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. She teaches both graduate and undergraduate nutrition courses and has been a guest lecturer at both the BU Goldman School of Dental Medicine and BU School of Medicine. Joan completed her MS from BU and is currently working toward her doctorate.

 

Joan is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND, formerly the American Dietetic Association) and the Massachusetts Dietetic Association (MDA). She has been a presenter and Presiding Officer at both the AND Annual Meeting and the MDA Annual Convention. She was previously named MDA's “Young Dietitian of the Year” and is the past Director of Education and Nominating Committee Chairperson for the MDA. She currently serves on the MDA board. Joan has received the Whitney Powers Excellence in Teaching award from Boston University and the Annie Galbraith Outstanding Dietitian award from the Massachusetts Dietetic Association.

                   

In addition to teaching and writing, Joan has a private practice specializing in weight management and lifestyle changes. Joan is often asked to translate complex nutritional issues in popular terms. As a National Media Spokesperson she has conducted over 850 media interviews and contributed numerous nutrition articles to a variety of magazines and news outlets.

 

Kathy D. Munoz, MS, RD, EdD, Humboldt State University

Kathy D. Munoz is a professor of nutrition in the Department of Kinesiology and Recreation Administration at Humboldt State University. She teaches undergraduate courses in introductory nutrition, exercise nutrition, and weight management, as well as courses in teaching preparation in higher education in the Department of Education. She received her Ed.D. from the University of Southern California in curriculum design and a M.S. in Foods and Nutrition with a minor in exercise physiology from Oregon State University.

Kathy is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the California Dietetic Association. Her professional memberships include Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine (DIFM), Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition (SCAN), and Weight Management (WM). She has published articles in Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, Children’s Health Care, Journal of Nutrition Education, and the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise, and has co-authored a series of curriculum guides for elementary teachers. Kathy has also been recognized for her research in, and development of, asynchronous learning.

 

Stella Volpe, PhD, RD, LDN, Drexel University

Stella Volpe is professor and Chair of the Department of Nutrition Sciences at Drexel University. She is a nutritionist and exercise physiologist whose research is on obesity prevention, body composition, bone mineral density, and mineral metabolism and exercise. Stella’s current research revolves around the effects of the environment on obesity—both how the environment can be changed to prevent obesity — and how the environment has resulted in a more obese nation and world.

Prior to beginning her faculty appointment at Drexel University, Stella was on faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, and previous to that, she was on faculty at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Stella is both a Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist (American College of Sports Medicine [ACSM]), and a Registered Dietitian. Stella is a Fellow of the ACSM. She is also a member of the American College of Nutrition, the American Society for Nutritional Sciences, the American Society of Clinical Nutrition, the American Dietetic Association, Community-Campus Partnerships for Health, and Sigma Xi. She has also been inducted into Delta Omega (Rho Chapter) National Public Health Honor Society and Gamma Beta Phi Honor and Service Organization.

Barbara Rolls, PhD, Pennsylvania State University

Barbara J. Rolls is Professor and the Helen A. Guthrie Chair of Nutritional Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Rolls also holds positions at Penn State as Professor in the Department of Biobehavioral Health, the Intercollege Graduate Program in Physiology, and the Integrative Biosciences Graduate Program. She is a faculty member of Penn State Hershey College of Medicine’s Neural and Behavioral Sciences Program and the MD/PhD Program.

Dr. Rolls is Past-President of both the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior and The Obesity Society. She has been a member of the Advisory Council of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIH). In 2008, Dr. Rolls received the Centrum Center for Nutrition Science Award at the Experimental Biology Annual Meeting. She was the 2010 recipient of The Obesity Society’s George A. Bray Founders Award and was elected to the American Society for Nutrition’s Fellows Class of 2011.

She is the author of more than 250 scientific articles and six books, including Thirst, The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan: Feel Full on Fewer Calories, The Volumetrics Eating Plan, and The Ultimate Volumetrics Diet.

Save money and your back!

We ended up renting this book from Amazon because my wife is taking a nutrition class and the class requires this book. At first she was hesitant renting a digital version of the book but ended up trying it because the cost to rent from Amazon was significantly lower then renting the book from her local college. She loves the digital version and she wishes all her books were in the format. She like that you can highlight sections in your book. As you highlight sections it creates a note section where you can quickly go back and review your highlighted sections. College books can can very expensive and your backpack can become very heavy. This is a solution to both. Save money and save your back. In the future we will only buy books in digital format and recommend to anyone needing to read this book.
