Thailand Unmasked

The fact that the author is a colleague has hopefully not had too great an influence on my view that this is a very important book. After all, I'm not going to get any personal or professional profit from an endorsement, even a ringing one like this. Millions of tourists visit Thailand every year, but whether they are aware of how the politics of the place actually work is another matter. Arguably, Thailand is more confusing than ever, because at least formally, it now seems to be a Western-style parliamentary monarchy. This arrangement, however, is very much the lipstick on the pig, so far as the author is concerned. In 'Thailand Unhinged', the reader is taken through the history of twentieth-century Thailand, and though the focus is very much on the modern era of Thaksin and after, the author paints with a broad brush. The chapter in which he steps back to reflect on the current state of Thai society and culture contains some particularly lively and illuminating pages on the economics of the sex trade in Bangkok.

The main message of the book, though, is that real power in Thailand is wielded by an informal network that comprises the royal family and its hangers on, big business, and military 'big men' who can back up their threats with lethal violence if this cosy arrangement is threatened. Adjectives like 'excoriating' spring to mind for the author's treatment of the Thai political class. No-one, apart from the much put-upon ordinary Thai who would like a larger say in his or her own government, emerges from these pages in good shape. No violence has been too awful, no trickery too vile, for it to have figured in modern Thai history. At the same time, perhaps even for that very reason, the author manages to avoid making the story a simple one of good versus evil, and to penetrate to the heart of the power relationships in the Thai polity.

This is not strictly an academic work, but it is carefully documented. There are plenty of references for those who want to follow up on the factual claims about recent Thai history that are being made. Even as the book stands, however, it is likely the author will persuade you that the true shape of Thai politics is frequently only obscured by the rhetoric and the legal and constitutional structures in terms of which the country is formally governed. At the same time, his passion for the place and its people shines through; despite all the problems he relates, he retains at least some qualified and cautious optimism that a better future is possible, and even has some practical suggestions to make about the nature of the changes required. Published at a time of great change within Thailand itself, this timely book deserves to find a wide audience. It is unlikely to win its author any friends amongst those currently in power there, but it is a very good introduction to anyone wishing to know more about contemporary Thai politics.

Thailands missing democracy

Today I finished the book, after reading in it all of the time I had becaurse it was like reading a detective novel.

I ordered it in Amazon the day I had finished Pasuk Phongpaichit & Chris Bakers "Thaksin" half year old up to date reprinting. These books fits good together and are of current interest after the long demonstration in Bangkok, this year, which startet the 13th marts and first finished more than 2 month later after 88 killed by military, and 37 missing.

And I can se that Ferrara, becaurse he lives outside Thailand, can tell more abouth the dark side abouth who that have the power in Thailand. And as he write, 100 years ago there was more free press in Thailand than today. And as he write, back i 1290 CE the Thailand king had on his throne written much about being a democratic and a free contry, nearly including the words we connects to France under the revolution 500 years later: "Liberty, equality, and fraternity". And how the military and richt persons sinse 1932 have gone the oppostit way, after they startet having the power, to say that people out in country are not clever enough to understand politic and thereby wouting.

In some ways it's a shame that we in the book don't have about the demonstration this year, but after reading the book it's clear to se that it would happen as it's the same that has happened againg and again since 1932.

He writes that that Thaksin problem was not that he, as other who was choused to rule the contry, in his pcket got money from the state, but as he got the people to think about democracy. The power they had by wouting. And this made the generals remove Thaksin.

Some of the many references in the book was to BBC. And then going to BBC in my PC I found that BBC was much deeper in whatr was going on in Thailand, than my danis news.

In the book there allso is a good chapter "Thailand for sale" which has much to do with prostitution concerning money and foreingers.

Before having finished the book I went to Amazon to se if Ferrara had been writing other book about politiks but as a shame not. But I'm looking forewards to see if he will be writing more of the same kind.

Great understanding of the challenging Thai past

I am traveling to South East Asia later this year. Part of why I am going there is to get a better understanding of the business environment and hopefully what makes the region such a hot bed of opportunity. When I sat down to analyze what I already knew about the region; I realized it wasn't that much. So I fell back on my undergraduate training in political science to try and get a better understanding of what had happened in the recent past, and what could be expected in the future.
After reading Federico Ferrara's work I feel I have a much better understanding of how the Thai political process has worked for the past 75 years, and what could be on the horizon. This book is broken down into 6 chapters, each taking a look at unique aspects of the political reality that is Thailand. While each chapter could stand on its own, the combined picture and history is what the book's value is really apparent.
In all the truth the first chapter of the book was challenging to get though. Not because of the writing, which was great, but the topic. All the abrupt changes to the Thai political status over the recent history makes for challenging reading, but also underscores how challenging it must have been for a country to survive all those regime changes.

Very poorly updated

This book was very poorly updated from Francois Le Berre's original book "The New Chameleon Handbook." He has information in it that is totally wrong like where he says that there is currently a quota of 60 C. parsonii to be exported annually and that 475 C. parsonii were exported in 1997, when all exportation of C. parsonii from Madagascar was stoped in 1994 and no new quota has yet been set. He also is still claiming to breed chameleons in Madagascar at a ranch or breeding facility that is owned by a Frech scientist who says he just comes here to buy chameleons from him. He also has switched to the Klaver and Bohme classification system which puts fischeri and some other species in the genus Bradypodion but he still says all Bradypodion species are ovoviviparous as well as other things and if he is using the Klaver and Bohme system, this is not true as fischeri are oviparous. This book also still lists breeders that have been out of breeding and selling for the longest time. The book still has many errors in the index and he also has pictures in this book that are misidentified. This book is almost identical to his old book with the exception that it has fewer pictures, a new cover, and some updated information that much of is still very false. The book does not appear that it was edited for any mistakes. In short, this book was very poorly updated and you can get the same information (with still less false information and more pictures) in his original book.

I've bought the few books out there for keeping captive chameleons, and none are as relevant as this book! I only wish I'd bought this book three years ago! Great info and DEFINITELY worth buying!

About the Author
Recently, a good friend from Hawaii reminded me that he was the one who had told me about Lyle Ritz. After hearing that Lyle had recorded two jazz ukulele LP’s for Verve in the late ‘50’s, I became obsessed with finding both recordings. I’ll never forget hearing How About Uke for the first time and feeling that suddenly anything was possible on this instrument. The sophistication of Lyle’s chord voicings, his solos and the choice of the material completely erased for me any notion that the ukulele was one of the most misunderstood and under-appreciated musical instruments of all time. It also gave me the desire to try to change that perception.

This songbook is certainly a step in that direction. As more and more people are getting acquainted or reacquainted with the ukulele these days, there is a growing demand for more sophisticated arrangements. I can think of no better response than this extraordinary collection.

Not for every ukulele

The songs in the book have a melody line on a treble clef with tabs for "standard" uke with gCEA tuning above and tabs for "tenor/baritone" uke with DGBE tuning. Half of the songs have melody notes that go below middle C, which doesn't work with gCEA instruments with the high G which includes how many tenor ukes are tuned these days. On the accompanying CD, each song has the melody, a bass line which is not notated in the book, and both the "standard" tab chord in the left speaker and the "tenor" tab chords in the right. This is a very square performance, if not clinical. It does not swing, have any rhythmic interest, nor is there any embellishment in the melodic line: it ain't jazz except for the chords. It's hard to believe Ritz is playing, though that's what the book says. I found a number of the tabs to be extremely difficult to finger at all on a gCEA tenor uke, let alone in the context of playing a song, so using this book as a guide to jazz chords on the uke doesn't work well for me. Too bad, since the choice of American songbook standards is excellent. Lyle Ritz is a great player and his albums are highly recommended, but this book was a disappointment and needlessly so.

A great purchase if your into ukulele jazz

I wasn't sure that this book would deliver what I wanted but I ordered it anyway. Delivery was quicker than I imagined and when I received it I was more than pleased with the content and with the included CD. This is not a book for the beginner and I would put it in the intermediate to advanced level so if you are not of that standard you may find some of the jazz chords a bit daunting. Having said that it is definitely worth buying if you are keen to play (and learn) some jazz standards. In that respect this book is a must for your collection.

GOOD BUT HARDER THAN ANTICIPATED

The ONLY DRAWBACK buying music books from Amazon is that you can't thumb through the book enough to see if it is really what you want. The sampling wasn't very helpful as the book is much harder for a low level intermediate player....harder than anticipated. Perhaps another year of noodling and I'll be there but right now it's assigned to shelf.

Great Approach to Creating / Managing A Wardrobe

If you are frustrated by the standard quizzes and capsule rules -- pick up this book.

Anuschka lays out a detailed approach to developing your personal wardrobe. She stresses that personal style is very different from being fashionable. She explains when a capsule makes sense, when a "curated" wardrobe makes sense, and how to blend both. Most importantly, she teaches you how to define your own clothing rules. She does not provide lists or pictures of what works together -- that's your homework. She does provide completed samples of each assignment. Do not purchase if you want a quick, do-it-in-one-afternoon guide. It was work; however, I have a clear set of personal rules, fabric preferences, and outfit formulas. Pieces a quick-capsule-approach guided me to discard or pack-away are now in purposeful use!

While Anuschka is exceptional on the wardrobe element, I was only able to follow everything based on previous work. I'd be a bit lost on color, personalized style words, and garment basics without the prior read of Bobbie Thomas, The Power of Style (similar approach with clearer guidance on personal style & color palettes), Nancy Nix-Rice, Looking Good Every Day (required text for FIT NY Image Consultants), and Jennifer Scott, Lessons From Madame Chic (light-hearted stories underscoring and explaining personal style, quality, upkeep, yep, no quizzes her either). For me, understanding the fundamentals allowed me to maximize Anuschka's approach.

Having read those books, Anuschka is exceptional at the final mechanics of building and updating a wardrobe that meets YOUR needs and style personality. Really, no book can do it all. The Curated Closet is the final piece to my personal style & wardrobe journey!

Best wardrobe overhaul method out there!

I've been doing capsule wardrobes and working on editing my closet for the last two years. Here's what I love about The Curated Closet, and why I think it's better than the other wardrobe overhaul methods I've tried:

First of all, none of it is cookie-cutter; it's about what works for YOU. It starts with a look at your current outfits (as opposed to pieces in your wardrobe). She asks you to take pictures of your outfits for two weeks and then looks at your FAVORITE outfits, that you felt the best in, and helps you analyze them to figure out WHY you love them and then build your whole wardrobe around those elements. This is different from every other challenge I've looked at, which have you look at all the clothes you WORE and build your wardrobe around the pieces you wore, which is NOT the same as building it around your favorite outfits. For me, I had a lot of favorite pieces, mixed with filler pieces that I only felt "meh" about, and consequently only felt okay about the outfits, even though they had some of my favorite pieces. No more "meh"!!!

Walking away from this book I am purging a good chunk of my wardrobe (again; I'm down to less than 40 items now) but now have a clear set of guidelines for building it back up. I have a color palette, a couple of go-to outfit formulas, and a very specific but concise shopping list, of what I want to add, in order of priority. I finally feel like I've reached an end-goal and don't need to purge anymore! All that's left is to find the few pieces on my shopping list, and enjoy finally having my ideal wardrobe. Thank you for writing this book Anuschka Reeves, and thank you to Caroline at the Un-Fancy blog for recommending it!!

Helpful, grounded and a delight to read!

A delight to read & very, very helpful.

I started paying attention to my style about 4 years ago... and it was a messy first couple of years. Two years ago, I fell in love with the capsule wardrobe concept. It completely transformed the way I shopped, thought about clothes and got dressed in the morning. Love it! I'm now transitioning into a wardrobe that is less structured and even more awesome -- and this book was so helpful and illuminating.

The things that I especially loved include the styling challenges (it really opened my eyes about what I can do with my closet -- and what I was missing from an accessories standpoint), the tips on how to buy quality (it instantly made me a better shopper) and the detailed information on choosing a color pallet. I'm taking a step away from my historical color pallet this fall and this book made me feel more confident in those choices.

Overall, a delightful read and a sane, resonant voice to guide you through dressing in a way that is more "you" and less everyone else.

Downsides: the styles displayed in the book just didn't resonate with me (I love saturated color... and they seemed to be very summery) -- but it really wasn't an impact.

A Good Text Book for Computer Science & Engineering Students

Network is boring. But this book seems to be the first one that explains tedious network acronyms with easy language, combines fundamental theory with practical programming applications: telephone, telecommunications, TCP/IP, wireless, optical, switching, management, performance, security, and network programming.
The mixture of Linux and Window platforms also fit well with the project-oriented approach. Lots and lots of figures and examples definitely help, too.
This is also the first computer/network book with a curriculum sponsored by the NSF. (Forgive me if I am wrong);
Complaint? Well, still, network is still boring, at least compared to rock-'n'-roll.

A good book for both hands-on experiences and knowledge.

The book illustrates the fundamental theory and the state of art technologies in network and communication area. The most attractive is that it provides thoughtfully designed laboratory projects which are very useful to get hands-on experiences. The step by step instructions and trouble-shooting for the projects are extremely helpful for both beginners and experienced readers. What to be learned from this book can be utilized in a real world environment easily.

the worst book I have ever used!

The book does not have enough solved problems (only a few but do not have any good explanation anyway). For the questions at the end of the chapter, the author asks stuff that he has never even mentioned in the chapter. Believe me this is a boring book.
