What a delightful story!

Cassandra Grafton takes us down a different path with unique twists from the original Jane Austen novel. We end up in the same place, but the cast of characters is expanded and some locations are added for story development. The descriptions of Bath are especially vivid and true to life! I particularly liked how the familiar key events were not simply cut and pasted from the original, but fleshed out with other words and more insight behind the character's motivations.

From the beginning to the end, the character's dialog is believable and you can sense the Regency period by the way sentences are structured and the attention to detail from the period. This is a finely crafted work where the original characters are treated with respect and behave as in the original while additional characters are added to expand and take the story on its unique path. The new characters are given a well rounded persona and are not simply caricatures.

While some people may dislike the lengthening of this story, I like the extra touches of detail and character development. I like knowing more of the key characters thoughts and motivations, especially Darcy! The courtship and romance with passion is well done and in good taste - suitable for young and old alike. The violence is also well done and not a major focus of the story.

The roller-coaster ride of emotion and angst continues throughout the story, often making you want to give the characters a good talking to and a push in the right direction! Why characters, particularly Darcy, have hesitations to do what is obvious to the reader is well explained and plausible. This is a book that must be savored - skipping sections would be a mistake. The emotional buildup drags you along such that you totally lose yourself in the believable story.

I have bookshelves and a kindle full of Regency period novels and many variations of P&P. In addition to being on my kindle, Ms. Cassandra Grafton's novel is on my shelf of top rated books. This novel is exceptional in all respects!

Honestly I've never read a P&P adaptation before; but this one has made me want to read more - though I doubt I'd find any better than these. I've had the individual books on my watch list and when I saw all three volumes were available, I leaped on the opportunity. I don't understand the only other review that was posted since the ratings for her individual books are all tremendous. To each their own. However, for my part, these books were outstanding. Absolutely loved them and would wholeheartedly recommend them. Thank you, Ms. Grafton!

A Fair Prospect: Volume I, II, and III is a great read. Ms. Grafton does a very good job in keeping with the writing that Janeites have come to love. A great variation on a most beloved book. Worth the reading.

A shame that the conversion killed the book.

Although the book itself is very good and interesting, the Kindle conversion is an unmitigated disaster. Almost none of the equations and other mathematical expressions can be read, thus negating the book its essence. Unless one is very familiar with contemporary/high level math, it becomes unreadable after the chapter on French math from the XVIII century.

Maggie Geuens holds a PhD in applied economics at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, where she also worked as an assistant professor. Currently she is Professor of Marketing at the University of Ghent. She is the academic director of the Brand Management Centre at the Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School. Joeri Van den Bergh holds a masters degree in marketing (University of Ghent and the Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School). Tired of poor quality goods made of cheap materials? Make it yourself! I bought this book for my husband and as soon as he saw the contents he declared "This book has EVERYTHING!" If you're crafty or if you're into self-sufficiency, this book is a must-have for your library. Written by a man who learned from a master, my husband is right; this book has EVERYTHING!

great little book

there is nothing wrong with this book there maybe some information that is a little off, but who cares the rest of the info is worth learning I am new to being a blacksmith but I have been welding and using a torch for about 40 years so this info is very easy to understand for me but if you have had any experience with metal working this is a very good book do not let the bad reviews deter you from this fine work on blacksmithing and do not forget blacksmiths do not shoe horses farriers do that job. Blacksmiths make the tools so the other craftsmen have something to work with besides rocks! And remember you are not fat just calorically enhanced!

good read - techniques and tooling

I'm still reading this book. The first few chapters are a bit dry, but do set the scene for the rest of the book. I had to laugh when the author said blacksmithing is on the rise.. around here any blacksmithing gear is bought up by yuppies who hang the tools on their wall and call it period art... it means the demand is high, but it doesn't mean the yuppies know which end of the hammer to hold, just that it suits the dining room better than the kitchen decor.
The book... once in the real meat of the book (chapter 4 on) there is good instructional material, and more than adequate diagrams (single line and monochrome sketches) to assist the reader in learning the techniques and methods. There is a strong focus on the older techniques, but some mention of the newer technologies being used by modern hobbiests and adherents. There is enough diversity in the content to appeal to bladesmiths, farriers, armourers (SCA), and wrought iron workers, although the focus is definitely on wrought work, and general techniques.
