Frederick Copleston's "History of Philosophy" is a classic in the field. Written clearly and lucidly and accessible to a general audience, Copleston's study provides depth as well. This is certainly true of Part 2 of Volume 1, which covers Aristotle, the Stoics, and the neo-platonists. (Part 1 of Volume 1 covers the pre-Socratics, Socrates, and Plato.) While someone entirely unfamiliar with the history of philosophy might want to get a general overview of the period first, for anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of the history of philosophy, Copleston's work is the next step to take.

We Were Hoping for a Little Help from "The Giirl Who Wouldn't Brush Her Hair"

I purchased this book for a friend whose granddaughter didn't want to brush her hair or let anyone else do it. We loved the book and hoped that the four year old would also. As it turns out, she would prefer to let mice build nests in her hair to brushing it, but the book is adorable (like my friends granddaughter).

Do not brush this book off

I loved this book. The digitally coloured illustrations were perfect and brought the storyline to life. All the details in each picture were just delightful to peruse. A little girl with beautiful, long hair refuses to brush it because she says, "It's just her way." Her hair gets matted and tangled and a mouse decides it is the perfect spot for nesting and perhaps a perfect spot for a permanent home. Word gets out that there is a mouse in hair-residence, so the other mice decide to try their luck to see if there is "room for one more." The final count of the squatters is one hundred. One hundred pesky rodents who tell her knock-knock jokes, set up a film projector to watch movies and even concoct a cheese cellar. These little inhabitants become unruly and bossy, even demanding she cease from bathing because they cannot swim. The little girl finds because of her unkempt and unsanitary state her friends at school and even her parents step away from her. Finally she makes the big decision that she wants her old, hygienic life back, washes her mice-infested hair and gives herself a good scrub in the tub to regain her fastidiousness and her sanity. What will happen to her mice tenants? Will they find a place to reside other than her long, silky locks? Does the story have a "and they all lived happily ever after ending?" I suggest you get a copy and find out the demise of the annoying, furry little critters. The book is a fun read and kids will love the plot and especially the visuals. Who wouldn't want your own animated mousecapades scurrying around in your hair, something that can add some excitement to your boring life? I wouldn't that's who...makes my head crawl and itch just to think about it. But it makes a perfect tale to spin to children and they will love it.

Excellent story about good hygiene with illustrations that draw you in

Again, I was faced with a book full of mice! Rodents creep me out in the worst way. But I was determined to read this book as it looked fabulous and I very much enjoyed Bernheimer's, The Lonely Book.

In this book, a girl with gloriously thick and long hair refuses to brush her hair. One night the mice begin to move in one by one and make a cozy little nest out of the girl's hair. Before long, problems begin. The mice don't like water so the girl doesn't bathe. She can't sleep because the mice are so noisy and she doesn't want to crush them. This goes on until the final straw...the teacher won't let the little girl bring her baby doll to school because she already has enough friends in her hair. The girl chooses baby doll over the mice and bids farewell.

The illustrations in this story are rich, colorful and full of interesting background bits that draw the eye. I wanted to look over every inch of every page. This story brought me back to the days when we spent hours brushing "rats nests" out of my own thick and curly hair. Thankfully it never got so bad that mice moved in. I lost a few things in there occasionally though.

I highly recommend this book to all children (except those like me who are afraid of mice). It has a wonderful message about hygiene and it is hilarious good fun.

About the Author

Bob Bowers is CEO of Soliant Consulting, a 50-person firm that specializes in custom

database and web application development. He is a recipient of the FileMaker Excellence

Award and has co-authored seven books on FileMaker Pro development. In 2008 he was

inducted into the Chicago Area Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame. After graduating summa

cum laude in Music and English from Wabash College, Bob earned a master’s degree in

Musicology from the University of Chicago. Bob is also a proud dad of two young children,

an avid banjo player, and an accomplished woodworker.

 

Dawn Heady, a Senior Technical Project Lead for Soliant Consulting, has 20-plus years of

FileMaker solution architecting experience during which time she’s also been a successful

business owner, served as a CIO in the credit restoration industry, and as Vice President of

a company specializing in FileMaker plug-ins. She is an authorized FileMaker Training

Series instructor, a regular speaker at the annual FileMaker Developer Conference and

FileMaker webinars, and a contributor to the FileMaker Newsletter. In 2004 FileMaker

selected Dawn as a FileMaker 7 Idol finalist for her Interface-RAD solution. Dawn is an

avid fan of the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Fever, loves to dote on her grandchildren,

and is learning to sail her small wooden boat, Boxy Lady, which was handcrafted by her

loving husband.

 

Steve Lane, Chief Technology Officer of Soliant Consulting, served as Special Projects

Developer at Scott Foreman, a leading K–6 Educational publisher. He has written for

FileMaker Advisor magazine, and co-authored six books on FileMaker Pro. He has led training

classes in FileMaker technologies all over the country and is authorized to teach the

FileMaker Training Series. He regularly speaks at the annual FileMaker Developer

Conference where in 2003 he was awarded the FileMaker Excellence Award for “pushing

the boundaries of FileMaker Pro.” When not writing about technology, Steve is likely to

be found being chased about by his children or grumbling over the fingerings of J. S.

Bach. Or just grumbling.

 

Scott Love, Chief Operating Officer of Soliant Consulting, served at Ziff-Davis Interactive

as an online managing editor, served at Apple Computer as its web publishing technology

evangelist, and led the technical marketing team at Macromedia. He has written dozens

of feature and review articles on database and Internet/web topics for a wide range of

computer publications including MacWorld magazine and FileMaker Advisor. He has coauthored

four books: Special Edition Using FileMaker 7, Special Edition Using FileMaker 8,

FileMaker 8 Functions and Scripts Desk Reference, and FileMaker 9 Developer Reference. He is

also the producer for Grem Legends, an arcade game on the iOS App Store, and has written

a technical brief on FileMaker Go. He is an authorized FileMaker Training Series

instructor and a regular speaker at the FileMaker Developer Conference. In 2006 he was

awarded the FileMaker Excellence Award “for developing outstanding technical and training

resources for FileMaker.” Scott lives in the California Bay Area, where his penchant for

gardening can be indulged year round.

Essential for any FileMaker developer

This reference is full of useful information organized in a way that it is easy to find and use. Believe it or not, this volume is better than the previous developer reference for FM version 9. This book is essential for any serious FileMaker developer. My only regret is that the binding doesn't allow the book to lay flat on a desk. It really takes two hands to thumb through the pages. I just wish it could lay flat on the desk and allow my hands to do FM development on the keyboard.

I am an intermediate developer. That means I can 'get the job done' but not as efficiently if I knew a few 'tips and tricks'. This book is fantastic. It presents some pretty basic stuff, (like what is a layout) but also goes into intermediate topics like creating multi table relationships between table occurrences.

This book is 'new best friend' when I need a FMaker reference.

Good math curriculum!

My son isn't very mathy and struggles with programs who try too much at once. This program does one thing at a time. It's not visually over-stimulating, either. I think it's a good program that will get the job done.

A great instruction book for knitters seeking better ways to knit socks that fit.

I would like to thank Story Publishing for providing me with a free ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review.

‘How to knit socks that fit’ is an interesting book. As a person with big feet and who is a novice knitter I was really looking forward to reading it. As, yes, finding socks that fit is one of those minor banes of my existence. And I was not disappointed with this book. I simply need to get a chance to sit down and have a go!

Sometimes I felt this book perfect for a novice knitter with no sock knitting experience (AKA Me). At other times I felt it expected you to know how to knit socks already and this was just a continuation of that skill. Not in a bad way, and I never truly felt over my head, but some new and novice knitters might. I have the safety net of knitting family members and a spinner’s guild to fall back on if I get stuck in such a book… But as not everyone has such a safety net, I was a little concerned the attitude of ‘you know what I’m talking about’ I sometimes got from this book would put some newbies off.

Add to that I found the layout formatting sometimes a little sloppy – a section would start with the title at the bottom of one page, but the actual section in question all on the next page – and I found myself having to not give ‘How to knit socks that fit’ the full 5 stars. As a document writer myself soppy formatting is a pet peeve of mine and so can be a cruel reviewer when I see it. ;-)

But saying that, I still found the majority of the instructions well written and the book deserving a high score. I really loved the fact the pictures were in black and white so you could focus on the pattern and design and not be influenced by colours. And I loved the overall tone of the book as it reminded me of my spinning guild. A warm and friendly voice chatting away to you helping you work your way through the different methods within the book. This is the strongest connection I got from the book – it was FRIENDLY! It was approachable and therefore readable by any skill level. Well, that’s my opinion anyway.

I also loved the details given in the book to help educate the reader and improve their knitting skill. From the types of yarn, needles best to use at the beginning of the book, through to the different types of stiches and how to do them, glossary, abbreviations and suggested reading at the back – it just added to the whole friendly atmosphere generated by this book!

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes I would. But probably only to knitters who know more than just the basics. And also possibly only to those with some experience with knitting socks already. As I’ve said, I’ve not knitted socks before and parts of this book did cause me a bit of confusion. But most of it was something I could really work with.

Would I buy this book for myself? Yes I would. Big feet and a love of knitting draws me to this friendly and easy (mostly) to follow book. I can see it being added to my Amazon wish list in the near future.

In summary: The title says it all really. This book really is all about ‘How to knit socks that fit’ and something I think any knitter with a desire to knit socks would enjoy. I highly recommend.

Great introduction to knitting socks!

I'm a fairly new knitter, but I knew from the beginning that I wanted to learn to knit socks. I've been looking at several different books, sites etc., but How to Knit Socks that Fit by Donny Druchunas seems perfect for a beginning knitter. Druchunas covers the history of knitting socks, techniques for cuff down, toes up, how to knit with double-pointed needles, two circular needles or using the "magic loop" method. In addition she covers other ways to do the heel, toe, and different ways to vary the cuff. I enjoyed How to Knit Socks that Fit so much, that I will be ordering my own copy to keep for reference.

I received "Knit Socks That Fit", yesterday. I sat down and started reading. I've taken a couple of sock knitting classes, but I still didn't quite understand socks. This book is clearing the cobwebs for me. So EASY to understand!!!! AMAZINGLY CLEAR!!!

Set mostly in Rosarita Bay, a fictional coastal town near San Francisco, this debut collection from the editor of the literary journal Ploughshares traces the lives (usually the romantic lives) of a motley assortment of male protagonists. Lee examines the circumstances of Asians living in white society, as well as the differences and occasional tensions, mostly unnoticed by Anglos between persons of various Asian descents. "The Price of Eggs in China" finds gifted furniture designer Dean Kaneshiro caught in the middle of a feud between his girlfriend, Caroline Yip, and Marcella Ahn (aka the Oriental Hair Poets). Caroline is convinced that the more successful Marcella exists only to torment her, and Dean hatches a dubious plan to end their years-old rivalry. In "Voir Dire," public defender Hank Low Kwon grapples with his representation of a cocaine addict accused of beating his girlfriend's infant son to death. Hank's anxiety over the case and his occupation in general is exacerbated by the pregnancy of his own girlfriend, Molly, a blonde diving coach. And Korean-American oncologist Eugene Kim contemplates the peculiarities of mixed-race romances in "Domo Arigato," recalling an ill-fated weekend spent in Japan 20 years ago with a white girlfriend and her parents. Eugene wonders if "you couldn't overcome the hatreds of countries or race, any more than you could forgive someone for breaking your heart." Hatred and heartbreak, though, are mitigated by Lee's cool yet sympathetic eye and frequently dark sense of humor, as when, in the title story, young Danny Kim watches in horror as a drunk kisses his father on the mouth and proclaims, "I forgive you for Pearl Harbor." Just imagine Annie Yung. She's 38, with a good software job in Silicon Valley, but now she's listening to Patsy Cline, wearing tight jeans, cowboy boots, and a "bleached-blonde hairdo that looked for all the world like a plastic stalagmite." She's looking for love in a cowboy bar in Rosarita Bay (aka Half Moon Bay, California). It's no surprise that the guy she meets turns out to have as many complications as she does. And Annie is typical of the Asian American characters you'll meet in these lyrical and intriguing short stories. There's surfer Duncan Roh, whose search for a woman to marry is getting nowhere. One of his lovers is a reference librarian whom he met at a meditation class where she was seeking relief from the great stress in her life caused by people asking stupid questions. She dumps Duncan for his lack of self-awareness. Each of Lee's achingly vulnerable characters deals with totally believable fears, plus an added layer of racial awareness. The final story, "Yellow," sums it all up in the struggles of handsome Danny Kim, whose perspective is continually skewed by his fear of racism. The Rosarita Bay setting provides connection, but the characters also mingle, adding texture to a compelling, beautifully written collection. Peggy Barber

An Intelligent and Updated View

In an interview, Lee mentions Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio and Joyce's Dubliners as literary influences for his seminal work of short stories, Yellow (2001), which focuses on the lives of Asian-Americans living or connected to Rosarita Bay, modeled after Half Moon Bay, California.

Lee's book avoids immigrant narratives focusing instead on the lives of Asian-Americans who experience themselves as "American" without the carrying the complex weight of moving from one country to another. While one may encounter shadows of post-diasporic experience in the stories, "Casual Water" and "Yellow", Lee does not preoccupy readers with plot lines most often associated with the work of more commonly known Asian-American writers.

Instead, he illustrates well the various issues assimilated Asian-Americans face as they live in a country where occasionally, they are reminded of their immigration status, regardless of whether they have been born in the United States. For Lee, race politics includes a Chinese thug who questions his Korean-American attorney about his white girlfriend in "Voir Dire", presuming that a white girlfriend automatically indicates a form of race treachery. Annie Yung, in the delightful, "Lone Night Cantina", assumes a cowgirl identity only to find herself facing the problems with assuming an identity that is not authentic to her person.

Some Asian-American students will react to Yellow by arguing that they do not find Lee's characters "Asian" enough which begs the question: What does it mean to be Asian/Asian-American and what are the risks of narrowly-defining characteristics that ultimately lead to essentialism. Feminists have been right to point out how essentialism damages women and similarly, readers can bring their assumptions to the book so long as they understand that reading Lee's work may cast new light and perhaps, widen the spectrum of race representation. Readers who presume to know what "Asian" is may find themselves struggling with Lee's honest portrayal which avoids reinforcing images of Asian-Americans as perpetually struggling, self-hating, or striking nationalistic attitudes. Marked with a fluidity of language and expression, Lee's affection for his characters allows them genuine epiphanies without sentimentalism.

Eight-Legged Perfection

I don't think I've ever encountered a collection of stories where every single story fulfilled me so thoroughly. There are eight gems in Yellow, seven decent-sized stories and one long one, the titular tale that may be the most accomplished of the lot. That story chronicles the life of Danny Kim, who is doing exactly what FDR told everyone not to: fearing fear itself. The fear in Danny's life is racism, and he's never actually hurt by it in any grand fashion, probably because he heads it off (or at least thinks he heads it off). His character is fascinating and yet very believable: he's the kind of guy who, at the prospect of getting knifed by an assailant, might take out his own knife and slice himself before any damage could be incurred by the other party. "Yellow" is the longest story in the book and the most satisfying.
I found "The Price of Eggs in China" to be the most fun story, full of lovely twists and great detail about the making of furniture. "Casual Water" was the most heartbreaking, a sad story about two boys abandoned by both parents. Really, there isn't a weak story in this entire book. It's unfortunate that Yellow probably won't get past the typical Asian-American reader, because this book is quite universal in many respects, much like Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies.
Oh well. Maybe not every Joe and Jane Doe will read it, but here's one reader who's a much happier person for having read this wonderful collection.

At Last

Finally an Asian American work that avoids cliches and writes about such things as Asian American men and Asian Hottie fetish mixed with racism and sexual politics to boot--and all with real intelligence. Lee pins everyone to the wall--men and women--explores their issues, their sexuality, their prejudices, and their hang-ups in a subtle, but engaging and realistic way. The prose is top-rate, Lee is a masterful storyteller on par with some of the best fiction writers out there. The stories "Casual Water" and the eponymous "Yellow" are poignant, well-written stnadouts; but check out "Domo Arigato," the story of a Korean American male and his white lover in Japan, and you get the feeling of Finally! Really great writing that has finally broken past the cliched Asian American streotypes of the past!
