Great content, and right to the point.

I've been looking for a book on this subject for a while. There's plenty of pdfs online, but nothing as complete, yet concise as this book.

You will need the right prerequisites about computer architecture and digital electronic to fully appreciate the content. Some Verilog basics is also desirable in my opinion.

After just a few chapters, you will be able to make your first cpu with a complete ALU and sequencer. The following chapters are dedicated to advanced topics like interrupt handling in your CPU, pipeline and superstar architectures, memory hierarchy...

There are many diagrams, which is really helpful given the complexity of the task. Code is also available online.

I really recommend this book if you are interested in microprocessor architecture and understanding how it works under the hood.

I have the Chinese version of this book and it is quite good for beginner.

the verilog code is good to help get you going incrementally. I understand this book is for basic CPU design implementation but would still prefer the author to discuss some performance/power trade-off for the designs in each chapter.

One more thing, you can actually get a copy of the source code from the publisher's website.

About the Author
Carol R. Ember started at Antioch College as a chemistry major. She began taking social science courses because some were required, but she soon found herself intrigued. There were lots of questions without answers, and she became excited about the possibility of a research career in social science. She spent a year in graduate school at Cornell studying sociology before continuing on to Harvard, where she studied anthropology primarily with John and Beatrice Whiting. For her Ph.D. dissertation she worked among the Luo of Kenya. While there she noticed that many boys were assigned "girls' work," such as babysitting and household chores, because their mothers (who did most of the agriculture) did not have enough girls to help out. She decided to study the possible effects of task assignment on the social behavior of boys. Using systematic behavior observations, she compared girls, boys who did a great deal of girls' work, and boys who did little such work. She found that boys assigned girls' work were intermediate in many social behaviors, compared with the other boys and girls. Later, she did cross-cultural research on variation in marriage, family, descent groups, and war and peace, mainly in collaboration with Melvin Ember, whom she married in 1970. All of these cross-cultural studies tested theories on data for worldwide samples of societies. From 1970 to 1996, she taught at Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has also served as president of the Society of Cross-Cultural Research and was one of the directors of the Summer Institutes in Comparative Anthropological Research, which were funded by the National Science Foundation. She is now executive director at the Human Relations Area Files, Inc., a nonprofit research agency at Yale University.

After graduating from Columbia College, Melvin Ember went to Yale University for his Ph.D. His mentor at Yale was George Peter Murdock, an anthropologist who was instrumental in promoting cross-cultural research and building a full-text database on the cultures of the world to facilitate cross-cultural hypothesis testing. This database came to be known as the Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) because it was originally sponsored by the Institute of Human Relations at Yale. Growing in annual installments and now distributed in electronic format, the HRAF database currently covers more than 370 cultures, past and present, all over the world. He did fieldwork for his dissertation in American Samoa, where he conducted a comparison of three villages to study the effects of commercialization on political life. In addition, he did research on descent groups and how they changed with the increase of buying and selling. His cross-cultural studies focused originally on variation in marital residence and descent groups. He also conducted cross-cultural research on the relationship between economic and political development, the origin and extension of the incest taboo, the causes of polygamy, and how archaeological correlates of social customs can help draw inferences about the past. After four years of research at the National Institute of Mental Health, he taught at Antioch College and then Hunter College of the City University of New York. Heserved as president of the Society for Cross-Cultural Research and was president (since 1987) of the Human Relations Area Files, Inc., a nonprofit research agency at Yale University, until his passing.

Maria Teresa LladÂ³ i Riba has created artworks in a variety of media, but prefers leather crafts over all others. Her work can be seen in public and private collections in her native Spain, as well as in Germany, France, Switzerland, Japan, Argentina, and the United States.

A contemporary version on classic techniques

Complete information on leather and the crafting of leather photographed and laid out in a contemporary manner. Most books on leather crafting are pretty old, and the styles and projects illustrated in them are very dated. This one has everything you need to know to get started and provides a wealth of information you can read or skim over until you feel you need it--all in one volume. And, the techniques are incorporated on contemporary projects, so you can see how these time tested methods can be applied to today's fashions and styles. Simply the BEST.

Great intro to the history & small projects with leather.

I recently was given an old set of leather working tools and became enamored with small projects. Everything local is very oriented towards Tandy Products and I was looking for something different. This is written by 2 women from Spain and the book has a very Moorish / North African feel. It is a very practical short history of leather, then a god overview of techniques, and then some intorductory projects including weaving, carving, painting and tooling of different leathers. There also is a section with pictures of Modern & old Leather Art. Much more than a coffee-table book!

Good for the artistically-minded

I found this to be a very good book although I think that it is more for the artistic side of leather work than the practical. I will nonetheless try at least a couple of the projects because they look nice and the book showed me that I could perhaps explore a more artistic side of myself.

Sullivan untangles the complex relationships between class and race in contemporary white identity and outlines four ways this orientation is expressed, each serving to establish one s lack of racism: the denigration of lower-class white people as responsible for ongoing white racism, the demonization of antebellum slaveholders, an emphasis on colorblindness especially in the context of white childrearing and the cultivation of attitudes of white guilt, shame, and betrayal. To move beyond these distancing strategies, Sullivan argues, white people need a new ethos that acknowledges and transforms their whiteness in the pursuit of racial justice rather than seeking a self-righteous distance from it."

Shannon Sullivan is Head of the Philosophy Department and Professor of Philosophy, Women s Studies, and African American Studies at Penn State University. She is the author and editor of many books, including Race and Epistemologies of Ignorance (coedited with Nancy Tuana), also published by SUNY Press.

Excellent Rare Insights

This is an excellent analysis of modern (post-modern) middle-class liberal thought processes. As Shannon Sullivan points out, these four major categories of distancing oneself from toxic portions of American history are unconscious. More importantly, making these items conscious such that we can cast light on the darkness of "colorblind" approaches demands that we face the issues so as to grow (hopefully) towards a less racist society. Ms. Sullivan's candor and precise--sometimes cutting-- observances are admirably displayed with humility. I am thrilled to discover such an esoteric and intellectual writer who is simultaneously contributing to a field (critical race theory) which has the potential to make such tangible differences in our lives.
